Today, I am celebrating one year as a Co-founder of Canada Startup Association. Together with the President Tehmina A Chaudhry, we achieved some amazing milestones such as: 1. Mentoring over 200 women startups 2. Supporting Canadian startups at Expand North Star in Dubai 3. Helping newcomers establish their businesses in Canada. One of the community of entrepreneurs that need a lot of support in Canada is BIPOC. We know that BIPOC entrepreneurs still face significant challenges. There are systemic barriers, limited access to capital, and fewer networking opportunities for this community. These obstacles can suppress their full potential, but we believe in turning challenges into opportunities. Canada Startup Association has identified that as one of the priority. That’s why we are hosting the AGAZ Summit on 15 November 2024. 6 Years Ago I Was in Training Camp at Venture for Canada Last week, I shared my biggest learnings in marketing with the 2024 fellows I called it The 7 Things You Should Know About Marketing in Startups *** 1/ Marketing is not about logos, designs, or social media It's about understanding the customer, making them aware of who you are, getting them to engage with your brand, and converting them into a customer. 2/ There are 20 functions of marketing, you'll do all 20. In startups, marketing is all hands on deck. You'll have to learn growth, product marketing, content, events, PR, and creative. 3/ Marketing is extremely cross-functional Expect to work closely with and depend on other teams. Without this, everything breaks down. 4/ Study the fundamentals, they never change I've worked at 4 companies in 6 years, and so much changes from role to role. But what never changes are the fundamental skills needed to make you a good marketer. 5/ Marketing doesn't help a shitty product If the market doesn't want what you're selling, it will be difficult to market it and make an impact. 6/ You don't need to be passionate about what you sell Don't focus on finding passion. Focus on stacking your skills and becoming smarter, and when your dream opportunity comes, you'll be ready. 7/ Breaking into marketing is hard Marketing jobs requiring 0 skills or experience are hard to come by, but there are three ways to get around it: 1) Learn how to create and share work online 2) Be the marketing ops/math person 3) Learn to sell and transfer that experience to marketing. I stole this one from Stewart Hillhouse. *** It was fun to revisit and synthesize what I know now, but trying to make it understandable to someone just starting their career. Sometimes, an experience like this makes you realize how far you've come (even when it doesn't feel like it).

👉 Important changes to the Start-Up Visa Program 🇨🇦 When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Let's discuss the recent updates announced by IRCC concerning the Start-Up Visa Program. It's important to recognize that changes to immigration processes are inevitable and often occur in response to the program's growing popularity, which can sometimes attract misuse. However, maintaining a positive outlook is crucial—we can still turn challenges into opportunities. The government has introduced a cap, limiting each Designated Organization to issuing only 10 letters of support per year. On a brighter note, all applications from the venture capital and angel investor streams will receive priority processing. This also applies to applications supported by business incubators that involve an investment of at least $75,000. In 2023, Canada was ranked as the number one most attractive destination for start-up founders by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This ranking was based on several factors including access to capital, corporate tax rates, workforce skills, the strength of universities, quality of life, and immigration policies that support entrepreneurs and their families. This change certainly doesn't close the door for entrepreneurs looking to start their businesses in Canada. One factor that’s often underrated but absolutely key when deciding whether to place an order on an e-commerce platform is the delivery timeline. The fact that my first order from Temu was delivered within 6 days was a major reason I reordered. Daraz has also kept me around for over 6 years now as a retained customer by consistently delivering within 3-4 days. On the other hand, I've always loved ordering groceries from foodpanda when deliveries arrived within 30 minutes but stopped for a while when I was living at a location where it started taking 1.5 hours. Another exciting and insightful episode of Shark Tank Pakistan! Saraaf stole the show with their entrepreneurial brilliance, landing a massive $5.3 million USD deal for 20% equity. One rule in Shark Tank Pakistan that puzzles me is that Sharks cannot reduce the amount being asked, which limits their ability to counter unrealistic valuations. This means Sharks are offering equity deals coupled with a line of credit to be repaid through royalties—interest-free, as per Islamic principles. While this aligns with Islamic finance, it raises questions about its practicality for investors. Royalties, often tied to gross revenue, may take years to recover the initial loan, and with currency devaluation, the return diminishes significantly. I feel that tying funding to a fixed amount limits creative negotiations between the Sharks and entrepreneurs. Is this truly in the best interest of investors? I feel this rule should evolve to give the Sharks complete freedom in making their offers, making the negotiations more fun and engaging. Otherwise, it’s a one-sided game where dreamy valuations dictate the decision-making process. For example, someone asked PKR 300 Cr (10.7 Million USD) for 3% equity. 🥲 Requests like these leave little room for meaningful negotiation. There may be specific reasons for this rule, but it feels like a missed opportunity to make the show more dynamic. What do you think? Should this rule change next season?
