Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary

The Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary was introduced to Adventure World over a decade ago thanks to Lizzie Doyle (In-market rep. Canadian Rockies & Calgary), knowing that this conservation organisation would resonate strongly with our ‘Travel with Purpose’ principles. I was privileged to visit the sanctuary with Lizzie and meet founder Georgina De Caigny (pictured centre), who shared her dedication to the rehabilitation and rehoming of displaced wolfdogs. Their mission is to provide rescued wolfdogs with a meaningful and fulfilling life, while offering experiencial education to promote the wellbeing and understanding of wolfdogs. Located just a 20 minute drive from Calgary, the 160 acre sanctuary is home to a variety of wolfdogs that have been neglected, abandoned, or displaced. Adventure World travellers can enjoy a one-of-a-kind educational experience with a conservation expert and observe various packs of wolfdogs in natural surrounds. A few weeks ago, our team had the chance to visit the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary just west of Calgary. We were blown away by the facility, its staff, and especially the stars of the visit - the wolfdogs. As we enjoyed our experience, we had several opportunities to converse with staff about their roles, and what kind of challenges they bump into in running this kind of facility. The biggest takeaway we learned was that finding safe, durable enrichment toys for the wolfdogs is difficult, and can be very expensive. About a week later, our team had an idea, so we reached back out to the sanctuary. Drawing from our experience in creating pipeline pigs, we recognized that several of the food-safe, polyurethane pigs that we already produce could be a perfect wolfdog toy. Extremely tough and durable while still being flexible and malleable, we brought a few of our pigs back to the sanctuary the next week - not only do the wolfdogs love them, but they are proving to be very durable. Here are a few pictures of the joyful antics that ensued when the Yamnuska team used one of our pigs as an enrichment toy, filling it with treats and introducing it to the animals. We look forward to continuing to help out the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary where we are able - and are naturally very excited for our next visit there.

In November of 2023, we were contacted by the owner of Warmland Wolf Kennels, a long-time wolfdog breeder on Vancouver Island, who was closing down his operation. He was looking for a permanent, safe and secure space for his wolfdogs to land where they could live out their lives and be happy. After a lot of information gathering and logistical planning, we came up with a plan to give these wolfdogs their forever home here at the Sanctuary. After over 4,000 kms travelled, $3,800 in travel costs (the ferry and BC gas is expensive with a truck and trailer!), and $12,000 in veterinary costs, we were able to rescue 15 wolfdogs and bring them to their new and permanent home at the Sanctuary.
