Restoring habitats and reversing wildlife decline
About us
Founded in 1967, World Wildlife Fund Canada is the country’s largest international conservation organization, with the active support of hundreds of thousands of Canadians. WWF-Canada is part of the WWF global network, working in 100 countries worldwide. Our head office — located in Toronto — is home to WWF-Canada’s operations and fundraising teams while our conservation staff are also based across the country from Nanaimo, B.C. to Iqaluit to St. John's. Building on half a century of experience, and with an impressive track record around the world, WWF-Canada has the unique ability to drive large-scale change from local to global levels. Together, in partnership with foundations, governments, businesses, communities, individuals and our supporters, we are working to conserve species at risk, protect threatened habitats and address climate change. We are drawing on Indigenous knowledge and implementing nature-based solutions that challenge the way we work and redefine humanity’s relationship with the planet. Our long-term vision is simple: to create a world where people and nature thrive.

#ICYMI: Here’s how investing in nature helps reduce business risk and build corporate resilience. Kathrin Majic, Senior Vice-president of Development at WWF-Canada sat down with Shilpi Singh, Assistant Vice-president of Sustainability at Aviva Canada, presenting partner of our Nature and Climate Grant Program (NCGP), at our annual Corporate Partnerships Summit. This summit gathers our existing partners and showcases how businesses can have an impact by making nature a priority. The growing impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss pose a threat to all industries, potentially disrupting supply chains, increasing costs and intensifying regulatory compliance measures, among other things. It's in the interest of businesses to make protecting and enhancing nature a strategic imperative. So we looked at how Aviva’s doing it. "Biodiversity loss is intrinsically linked to climate change and reducing it will help promote climate adaptation and resilience. If we can get it right via strategic partnerships and activities, we can make a meaningful difference,” said Singh. Along with their global ambition to be net zero by 2040 and their Biodiversity Policy that includes seven principles to guide their decision making, Aviva is working on a group-wide strategy with an overarching ambition and action plan to support nature. Since 2021, Aviva has contributed over $3 million to nature through the NCGP, which supports restoration efforts by local organizations and Indigenous Peoples to improve habitats and capture carbon. The program has supported the restoration of over 700 hectares of land and helped more than 283,000 Canadians become more climate resilient. “Supporting nature and tackling biodiversity loss is imperative for businesses to do,” said Singh. “At Aviva, we set an ambition and started the work before we had everything figured out. You don’t need to wait for an ideal time. You can always begin from where you are right now.” Learn more about NCGP here: https://lnkd.in/gxxGb6QV

"An emergency order from Ottawa would be a lifeline for 72 southern resident orcas, whose population has reached its lowest number in 30 years. The government refused such an order six years ago." Read this opinion piece by BEATRICE FRANK, executive director of the Georgia Strait Alliance and former WWF-Canada employee.
Beatrice Frank: Will emergency plea for endangered orcas go unheard for the second time?
