In an age of rampant misinformation and fake news, migration has become a lightning rod for xenophobic groups who seek to undermine trust in public institutions including the media. Migrants and refugees face significant barriers to making themselves heard in their host societies and to contributing to the public discourse on migration. All this impoverishes public debate and prevents inclusive and effective actions that address real concerns. Our WACC Conversation Circle "Unheard Migrant Voices" highlights tested solutions to enable migrants and refugees to be seen and heard, and identifies action steps to change media and political narratives about migration. Featuring • Clarice Canonizado, Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (APMM) • Anna Coulibaly, International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) Europe • Luis Fernando Gómez Gutiérrez, Jesuit Network with Migrants in Latin America • Christina Pope, Welcoming America Moderator: Lorenzo Vargas Mantilla, WACC Communication for Social Change program manager Have a look! https://lnkd.in/gwGRRYMt #MigrantVoices #RefugeeVoices #CommunicationForAll #ChangingTheNarrative

🌏 International Migrants Day: Together for Change 🌍 Today, we honor the courage, resilience, and invaluable contributions of migrants worldwide. At LWF Nepal, we stand united with WACC Global , Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants, and partner organizations across Asia Pacific through the transformative initiative "You Are Not Alone"—a project addressing human trafficking and promoting effective communication for migrants. This pioneering program empowers migrant citizen journalists, builds communities of care, and bridges gaps in awareness about trafficking policies. Through research, storytelling, and collaboration, we envision a world where migrants are informed, protected, and celebrated. How do we achieve gender equality in the media? Stocktaking since 1995 by WACC’s Global Media Monitoring Project (#GMMP) shows that progress remains slow, painfully so. And this on the eve of the 30th anniversary of UN Women's Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. What is needed is a comprehensive, systems approach – a whole-of-society approach as outlined in the report “Breaking Barriers”, published by Fojo Media Institute and the Center for International Media Assistance and co-authored by GMMP Global Coordinator Sarah Macharia together with Agneta Söderberg Jacobson and Malak Monir. Breaking Barriers maps out intervention pathways in three interconnected areas: 🔹 media regulation 🔹 ownership, management, and leadership 🔹 market dynamics and at three intersecting levels: 🔹 micro 🔹 mesa 🔹 macro The report’s launch event featured a thought-provoking discussion about what a broader enabling environment for gender-equal media might look like: 🚺 Laura Aguirre (Alharaca, SembraMedia) on advancing gender-equal media in authoritarian contexts 🚺 Dr Yemisi Akinbobola (African Women in Media) on the Kigali Declaration as a successful whole-of-society model 🚺 Martin Schori (Aftonbladet) on using AI to further gender equality in media 🚺 Luba Kassova (AKAS) on the business case for equitable news and on addressing backlash to gender equality Discover more: https://lnkd.in/gxvnCVBT #GenderEqualMedia #GenderEquality #GenderAndMedia #MediaDevelopment #Beijing30

Communication rights uphold human rights, writes WACC General Secretary Philip Lee, D.D. (h.c.) in the latest WACC Comment. The theme of Human Rights Day this year, "OurRights, Our Future, Right Now," cannot ignore – as the Pact for the Future appears to have done – the urgent need to address deficits in the global communications environment. #WSIS+20 may be the last chance for a lasting and meaningful rights-based framework enabling all people everywhere to be seen and heard. A peaceful and just future depends on it. #CommunicationRights #CommunicationForAll #HumanRightsDay #OurCommonFuture #waccComment

Faith communities can use practical tools, strategies, and global advocacy to counter — and prevent — the spread of false information. Yesterday during the webinar “Religion and Disinformation: How to be a trusted source” we heard real-life examples from people and organizations in Africa. 🔸 why it’s important to prevent communication gaps 🔸 how multistakeholder collaboration is key in situations of wide-spread, all-encompassing false information 🔸 why we need to be fact-checkers, not compulsive sharers 🔸 who has a responsibility to advocate for global accountability 🔸 why responsible local journalism needs to be supported Discover the case studies and approaches presented by Stanley Toddison (Presbyterian Church in Ghana), Jane ng'ang'a (Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network), and Lekan Otufodunrin (WACC Africa, Journalists For Christ): https://bit.ly/3OG2DpG With Sara Speicher and Peter Prove, organized by WACC and the World Council of Churches #DigitalJustice #StopMisinformation #StopDisinformation #PublicInterestMedia #DigitalGlobalCompact

CPJ’s CEO Jodie Ginsberg says Israel’s boycott of Haaretz is straight out of the authoritarian playbook and a threat to democracy, in a new op-ed with The Forward. “Information is a weapon in war. It is at its most effective when those in power control the means of transmission absolutely. Only with the existence of a free, independent and pluralistic media can the public be assured that they are getting the fullest possible picture. Without it, we are all less safe — and less free.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7bN6rRf 📷: Ahmad Gharabli/AFP via Getty Images
