🌊🚢 Recap of an insightful panel discussion at the GreenShip 2024 conference held at our Deloitte Summit! 🌱💡   I had the privilege of moderating a panel that included industry leaders Nicolas Pocard, Maryam Ebrahimian, and Vasileios Tzelepis. Together, we delved into the solutions and technologies that have already been proven in the marine sector, and we explored what is needed to deploy them at scale.   As we all know, the challenges surrounding the application and adoption of emissions reduction technologies are well-documented and well-understood. However, we believe that instead of spending excessive time defining these barriers, it is more beneficial to focus on deployment strategies.   During the panel, we had the opportunity to showcase two remarkable technologies: Ballard Power Systems's marine hydrogen fuel cell modules and Corvus Energy's marine energy storage systems. These technologies have already demonstrated their efficacy in reducing emissions and improving sustainability in the marine sector.   We also discussed the crucial role of Lloyd's Register in navigating the regulatory landscape. We explored how regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and regional emission regulations, such as those implemented by the European Union (EU), will impact the adoption of new technologies and the pace at which they are implemented. It was a pleasure to attend and participate the GreenShip2024 conference last week organized by Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate and hosted at our Deloitte Summit Office in Vancouver. The conference had vibrant conversations on various topics related to marine decarbonization including Clean Artificial Intelligence, the role of zero-emission fuels, adopting and scaling technologies, financing decarbonization eco-systems and projects, and the ports roles in the transition. It was great to see ports stakeholders represented from both British Columbia and Washington State. Some key take aways from the conversations were: 🌱Collaboration is key. Collaboration, both cross-border and cross-sector, is needed to accelerate decarbonization efforts and develop eco-systems at scale. 🚢 Technology is not the barrier. A significant barrier to decarbonization in the ocean transport sector is not the availability of technology, rather the limited access to capital required for implementing and scaling these technologies. ⚓ Implementing regulatory mandates is complicated. It's complicated to implement regulatory mandates for organizations like the International Maritime Organization due to the competing interests of member countries involved. Our Chief Investment Officer John Casola was in #Vancouver at the GreenShip 2024 Conference, to discuss financing maritime decarbonization with our partner BC Ferries. Our $75M loan to BC Ferries supports their purchase of four electric ferries. The vessels will reduce emissions by 9K tonnes annually while providing quieter commutes for residents in the greater Vancouver area. Yesterday was a big day for the Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate and the broader maritime community for both BC and WA as it was our third annual #GreenShip conference. This year we teamed up with the great people at Deloitte in Vancouver to deliver an event focused on decarbonization of this hard-to-abate sector. Six ports, several terminals, ship owners & managers, and a variety of companies in this supply chain were in attendance along with supporting not-for-profits and government agencies. And this year saw some great cross-border discussions with stakeholders from Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellingham join their peers from greater Vancouver, Victoria and Prince Rupert. It was an engaging day of discussions all centred around how to decarbonize the maritime sector...at speed and scale. Topics included Clean AI, legal & regulatory perspectives, zero-emission fuels, technology adoption, Ports and their role in the transition, ESG, and climate finance & funding. There was so much to take away from these practitioners, thought leaders and executives. Ones that I would like to highlight include: - the importance of collaborating even with competitors; - timing is getting urgent, even scary; - cross-sector opportunities are abundant, but let's not forget cross-border opportunities, too, - we can't think at the product, project or company scale, but rather need to bring a systems-level investing framework to the table; - BC (and WA, too) are well-positioned to lead the world in this great transition...we just need move faster. This event brought together smart, passionate people committed to changing the future of shipping by reducing GHG emissions. Paul Blomerus joined a panel with Sabina Russell, P.Eng. and David Fujimoto, moderated by Arvind Ramakrishnan to talk about the Application of Alternative Fuels. Paul's remarks addressed the opportunities and challenges on the path to alternative fuels for shipping. A theme running through the day was the importance of collaboration and relationships to make progress on maritime decarbonization. Working together is everything!
