How many PIAs did you complete last quarter? How long did each one take? Sorry (not sorry), but nobody cares. That's basically what our unscientific survey revealed during our *Show Me the Money: Prove Privacy’s ROI with the Metrics That Really Matter* panel at the #IAPP PSR Conference in LA a few weeks back. Check out my blog on Privacy Metrics for this and more hard truths, because #privacyplatitudes are out this season. Snarky opinions are my own and do not reflect the professional and polite delivery of brilliant insights by my co-panelists Ron De Jesus, Aaron Weller, and Avishai Ostrin. Seriously, Transcend organized a great panel about the value of privacy and I was honored to be invited. Can you think of any other privacy software provider with the integrity to say that sometimes you don't need another tool or dashboard? The Privacy Pro is independent and vendor neutral, but I was more than happy to join this panel because I am continuously impressed by the credibility and honesty of everyone I have met from Transcend, not to mention their support of LGBTQ+ causes. And the socks.

Clients tell us it is hard to find people with experience doing PIAs, many are paying for tools that don’t work, and most have a backlog of PIAs to do. Last year, we launched The Privacy Pro Academy to empower privacy pros with hands-on experience completing the PIA that we use in our practice. It is a simple tool that just works. Now, we have updated the PIA and released version 2.0 to: -- Expand coverage. New questions and options reflect US State requirements for assessments, such as the Colorado Privacy Act, as well as AI Governance considerations. -- Refine the risk assessment. A more nuanced understanding of high-risk scenarios makes sure that PIAs are not unnecessarily triggered. -- Simplify the workflow. Reflects how our clients have used this tool to collaborate between privacy and business teams, particularly when it comes to examining the relevant privacy requirements. There are several ways to check it out! Registration links for each are available on our website, https://lnkd.in/gD6GmM4M. -- See it in action during the Free Webinar on October 16 -- Learn by doing in the Hands-on PIA Workshop on October 24 -- Join an info session on October 8 or 24, or book a call at a time that works for you.

What does it actually mean to be a partner to the business? Lauren Reid and Meaghan McCluskey are going to show you how we do it, using a #PIA Case Study. We will start with the back-story: an all-new case study with a fun cast of characters including the CPO, Privacy Analyst, Marketing, and Product. It covers timely and technical topics (#mobileapps and #locationdata) and a realistic scenario: we’re late to the table and we have to move forward without all of the information we need.

Happening today at 1 pm ET is a discussion with Vance Lockton on age assurance. Generally speaking, age assurance refers to methods used to determine the age or age range of an individual. Want to get in on the discussion? Send an e-mail to [email protected] for an invite. #privacy #ageassurance
Our next Alumni Connections networking event on Thursday, September 26th at 1 pm ET/10 am PT will feature Vance Lockton, Senior Technology Policy Advisor at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Vance is leading an initiative on age assurance where the OPC launched an exploratory consultation earlier this summer. What is age assurance? It encompasses various methods used to determine a user’s age (or age group) with different levels of precision. This process can be required by law in some cases or adopted by organizations as part of their compliance strategy. For example, age assurance is often used when accessing adult-only websites, where users must confirm they are over 18. If you haven't received your invitation to join this discussion, send an email to [email protected]. https://lnkd.in/gmfwAhpn

The Privacy Pro was pleased to be invited to share our insights into fostering business-first privacy solutions in the September issue of Privacy Laws & Business. You can find the article on our blog, which focused on the role of the Privacy Architect as part of the broader Privacy Ecosystem. Through the adoption of a “Yes, and…” mindset, Privacy Architects empower businesses to achieve their objectives through privacy-compliant means. A Five-Step Framework So how do we get to the “Yes”? Well, if you know Lauren and me, you know we love a good framework. The framework for the Privacy Architect’s role can be defined by five stages: 1. Contextualize: Understand the business team's culture, values, objectives, and incentives. Since business should drive the privacy strategy, the Privacy Architect must grasp what motivates the business. 2. Discover: Articulate how and, crucially, why the business collects and uses personal information, considering both data subjects' and data users' perspectives. 3. Design: Develop tailored strategies to maximize data value while safeguarding it and respecting data subjects' rights. 4. Negotiate: Recognize and accommodate reasonable trade-offs between privacy and operational requirements. 5. Execute: Engage in ongoing two-way conversations about implementing privacy protections, acknowledging that approaches may evolve on a weekly basis. To achieve this, the Privacy Architect must be able to listen without prejudice, understand that 100% compliance is not always achievable, and an appreciation for the bigger picture, balancing individual privacy needs with broader societal, community, and environmental considerations. A Blueprint for Engaging the Business For privacy professionals seeking to become more proficient Privacy Architects, the full article presents tips that have helped us get better results, along with specific examples.
