The Hillel Lodge leadership team began their journey to creating a Long-Term care Center of Excellence (CoE) by taking our Executive Green Belt training course. The first step was a two-day experiential session to build understanding in what Lean process improvement means, how to design and deploy a full Lean Management System (LMS) into their business and what it takes to come to life. The leadership team including Ted Cohen, CEO, Adina Libin, CPA, CA, Director of Finance and Shari Cooper Director of HR are currently measuring their weekly workload to identify what can be changed / stopped / started to create more efficiency. The measures will then be analyzed and reviewed to determine their first level changes. These will reduce the number of meetings and increase their efficiency with the time saved from these changes to be redeployed to their LMS implementation plan. The Hillel Lodge team will then move to the six implementation modules focused on foundational components of an LMS. Module one will focus on visual management and setting up quality board huddles (QBH) planned for January. Dale Schattenkirk, Partner, Healthcare Practice (right) was invited to present to local leaders within Red Deer on the state of the Canadian health system and how Alberta, in Dales, opinion measures up to the rest of Canada. We have heard story after story that the Canada health system is in the worst shape it has ever been. Six million Canadians without a primary care physician, wait times for services are months if not years long, and the aging population has limited home and long-term care resources. When we look at the data, Canada’s population has ballooned to over 41 million residents, an increase of 25% in the past 20 years. 90% of the population lives in the Golden Horse-Shoe and within 150 miles of the US border creating geographic disparity for residents that live in the northern parts of Canada. So how could we not be worse off? When we look at the health system data, we find that Canada has more doctors than ever. One General Practitioner for every 850 Canadians that is a 10% increase in the past 20 years. We have more hospital beds, and significantly more advanced clinical solutions than twenty years ago, easily outstripping the growth in population. Healthcare spending has increased by $200 Billion dollars over the past twenty years, tripling when the population has only grown by 25%. So, the question must be asked, why are we worse off? Because we are not. We are significantly more advanced clinically but the antiquated processes to administer these advances just cannot keep up. We don’t have a healthcare system problem.
