When people can't attack the merits of an argument they will instead attack the credibility of the person making the argument. How to maintain grace under fire: First, recognise this tactic for what it is - an attempt to discredit and distract. Responding emotionally or defensively gives power to the very narrative they’re trying to create. As Ryan says here – “you can stand up for yourself, but you have to be the beacon of self-control and decency because the moment you lean into bad behaviour, every lie that someone else has ever said about you becomes plausible in someone else’s mind.” Second, own your credibility. You’ve earned your place in the conversation through experience, knowledge, and results. Sometimes, people will try to downplay or dismiss you, not because you’re wrong, but because your presence threatens them, challenges their comfort or worldview. That's a reflection of them, not you. Finally, practice the art of disengaging with dignity. Not every attack deserves a response. Protect your peace by knowing when to exit conversations that veer off course into unproductive territory. Grace isn’t about letting things slide; it’s about being intentional about when, when and how you engage. 🎥Ryan Dunlap - great video.
