💡 How do we amplify the progress of women’s entrepreneurship? As part of #GenderCapitalResearchSeries, this week highlights the experiences of Canadian women entrepreneurs, with a focus on Indigenous women. We explore the unique challenges they face, the cultural values shaping their entrepreneurial journeys, and the systemic changes needed to support their growth and success. ❋ Bridging Cultural Values and Overcoming Funding and Mentorship Barriers to Empower Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs. - Indigenous women entrepreneurs have distinct demographic characteristics, business profiles, and culturally driven approaches to entrepreneurship. - Indigenous women entrepreneurs in the arts and creative industries are underfunded with limited personal income from their ventures. - Francophone Indigenous women entrepreneurs sometimes face language barriers, as many non-federal government entrepreneurial initiatives are available only in English, limiting their access to resources and support. - There are opportunities for funders and ecosystem builders to support Indigenous women in shaping the entrepreneurial ecosystem and contributing their unique knowledge and perspectives. → Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ePjsnM2s This is the Summary of “Mikwam Makwa Ikwe (Ice Bear Woman): A national needs analysis on Indigenous women’s entrepreneurship” by Ashley Richard (2021). ❋ Women Entrepreneurs Are Driving Economic Growth and Innovation Despite Persistent Challenges. - Women-owned businesses slightly increased despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. - Women entrepreneurs are narrowing the innovation gap, leading in marketing innovations and adopting digital technologies, -Despite progress, women-owned SMEs face lower survival rates, sector concentration, and greater challenges in accessing capital and sustaining operations. Investors and funders have the opportunity to revamp their funding criteria and selection processes, which have historically disadvantaged women, to better reflect the unique strengths of women-led businesses. → Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eqBCzQPn This is a summary of “The State of Women’s Entrepreneurship in Canada 2023” by Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (2023). Last month, SVX, in collaboration with the The Canadian Women's Foundation, hosted a Community-Centric Feminist Financing Design Jam. 💡We gathered an incredible group of entrepreneurs and ecosystem partners to explore barriers to financing and to brainstorm systems that address the needs and lived experiences of women and gender-diverse social entrepreneurs. What is feminist financing?  Feminist financing is an approach to funding and financial systems that prioritizes equity, justice, and inclusion for women, gender-diverse individuals, and other equity-deserving groups. It aims to dismantle systemic barriers in traditional financial systems and create structures designed to advance gender equity and social justice. Being feminist means challenging systems of oppression rooted in patriarchal "power over" relationships. It extends beyond gender to address the interconnected impacts of race, class, and other social hierarchies, prioritizing collective liberation by dismantling exploitative systems and building new, equitable systems where everyone can thrive. We are grateful for the amazing contributions, warmth, energy, and insight each participant brought to the Design Jam. Special thanks to Ghurbeen and Jehmol from Aangen, a social enterprise, for catering our event and enhancing the day with their exceptional service and delicious food. As we continue to refine our ideas for community-centric feminist financing systems and structures, we would love to connect with others who are playing with these same ideas. Feel free to reach out to [email protected] or follow SVX and the Canadian Women’s Foundation on LinkedIn for more updates.

We often talk about the power of bringing diverse perspectives together to drive meaningful change. Over the past few months, we’ve seen this in action through Alana Alvarez's time with us as an intern. As we wrap up her time at SVX, Alana highlights her experience over the past few months. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗩𝗫? "It was the firm's holistic approach to creating meaningful change. SVX doesn't just focus on one area—they look at the bigger picture. Their commitment to learning from the Latin American ecosystem and their appreciation for the region's unique approach to social finance made the opportunity meaningful for me as a Latina." 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? "The importance of a community-centered approach. I’ve learned how to make space for communities to share their voices and help shape solutions that matter most to them. I’ve also learned to recognize the value of my own contributions and feel more confident advocating for myself." 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗩𝗫 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀? "As I approach graduation, I am determined to step into a role that reflects my commitment to redistributing power—whether through narratives, decision-making, or financial resources. My time at SVX has shown me that my multidisciplinary background is a strength that allows me to approach challenges creatively." 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗩𝗫? "Working with my colleagues made every day memorable—they’re truly the best team I could have asked for! One (or two) standout moments would be helping organize and facilitate a design jam on community-centered feminist financing with the Systems Change team. It was a privilege to share ideas and learn from the expertise of inspiring women in the ecosystem. Another highlight was collaborating with the SVX Colombia team. I had the opportunity to develop a knowledge product centered on their accelerator for impact investing funds."

💡 Does having social ties matter more than a technical background? Does social media presence lead to more funding? And, how does a startup get more media attention? This week, in the #GenderCapitalResearchSeries, we explore how knowing the right people and being in the right network can impact women and non-binary entrepreneurs’ ability to access capital. (French translation coming soon.) ❋ Technical background and connections are more essential for the success of women entrepreneurs than male entrepreneurs. - A technical background gives significant advantages to female entrepreneurs. - It is more important for women entrepreneurs to have strong social ties with VCs than men, regardless of technical background. - Women founders can overcome gender bias through a strong technical background and strong networks. → Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-Y_Cqdf ❋ X (Twitter) can be a powerful tool for women entrepreneurs seeking VC funding. - Women-owned businesses benefit the most from adopting X (Twitter). - The positive effect of social media on funding disappears for established startups. - X (Twitter) can be a powerful tool for women seeking funding, especially in situations where information on funding opportunities is limited or unreliable. → Read more: https://lnkd.in/eyuZQxYX ❋ While investments from top-tier VCs drive startup media coverage regardless of gender, more broadly, having a female founder is linked to less media attention. - The most important predictor of whether a startup receives media coverage is funding from a top VC firm. - Startups with female founders and those with prior entrepreneurial experience tend to receive less media coverage.  - While media attention can enhance visibility, it may not be a sufficient condition for attracting more investment. → Read more: https://lnkd.in/enEmW2Pv ❋ Women face demand and supply-side constraints in venture capital. - After the 1980s, the number of investments in women-led businesses grew, but the overall share of capital going to women-led businesses remained small. - While the absolute number of women working in the American VC industry increased, the number of women moving on to decision-making roles remained low compared to men. → Read more: https://lnkd.in/eAgEwTnF Check out the #GenderCapitalResearchSeries: https://lnkd.in/eTXzu7yF SVX, Esplanade Québec, WeBC, Pond-Deshpande Centre, Spring, The Canadian Women's Foundation. *This research is part of WIN-VC Canada, supported by Government of Canada.
