It's cold out there and we're thinking of all the folks living on the streets and in shelters. People experiencing homelessness need our compassion. They also need basic necessities. My daughter and I filled some back backs to help out. Thanks to TELUS for volunteering in our community kitchen today for our #12DaysofHope, making it a "bakers dozen"! In the morning, the team made PB&J and bologna sandwiches.🥪 For lunch, they served pork & chicken with gravy, veggies, salad, and a bun. Dessert today was juicy apples and oranges! Alvin experienced trauma throughout his life. Substance use and mental health challenges are often related to trauma. Alvin’s childhood trauma, the loss of his community and the death of his thirteen-year-old daughter all conspired against him. When Alvin moved to Ottawa, he found meaningful work in the kitchen of a sports bar in the east end, putting the skills he learned at home into a profession he truly loves. It was going well until Alvin’s drinking cost him his job. Now, thanks to his resilience and the support of those around him, including the support of Shepherds of Good Hope, Alvin is on a path towards new life goals. He now has a safe place to heal. Congratulations to community leader Wendy Muckle for her appointment to the Order of Canada. Wendy’s contributions to our health and wellness initiatives over the past 25+ years have been instrumental in shaping Shepherds of Good Hope. From the early days of the Managed Alcohol Program, to formalizing Targeted Engagement Diversion, and for the creation of the Trailer, Wendy’s commitment to Ottawa’s most vulnerable has changed and saved the lives of thousands. Her work continues to have an immediate, daily impact on marginalized communities. Shepherds of Good Hope is forever grateful to Wendy for everything she does to support people experiencing homelessness. Just last week, Wendy was in Shepherds community kitchen, serving up lunch and smiles in celebration of the giving season. Congratulations Wendy!👏
