As this chart shows, the trend of overruns is growing. Why? The stakes are higher, the decisions more complex, and consensus harder to reach. Methane is a climate super pollutant—80 times more powerful than CO2 over the short term. Its impact on global warming is immense, but so is the opportunity to curb it. Reducing methane emissions is one of the fastest, most effective ways to slow rising temperatures and improve air quality. At COP29, the Global Methane Hub (GMH) reinforced this message, highlighting methane mitigation as the “emergency brake” we need. Initiatives like the "Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration" and cutting-edge satellite data from MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper are helping pinpoint and tackle the biggest methane emitters worldwide. GMH is calling for strong, measurable targets for methane reductions in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due in February 2025. A bold approach to methane can not only prevent disaster but also create healthier, more prosperous communities—especially in the Global South.
