It's been an enlightening few days at the inaugural Vancouver International Security Summit, which built on many successful instances of VIPSS in the years prior. I did not think I'd be meeting anyone from NATO this week! The sessions and 1:1 conversations were honest and refreshing. Here are some of the many takeaways for those who couldn't attend and are wondering if it's worth the time next year (it is): - Perspectives are diverse, the goal is common. There is so much more to agree on than to disagree on when it comes to protecting our national security. This extends well beyond cyber security of course, though hybrid warfare is increasing cyber's relevance in that conversation. - A recent global technology outage (no finger pointing here) while not a cyber incident, was a great dress rehearsal for a real, live-fire, mass cyber event. Tabletop exercises are one thing, but are we truly prepared? Let's ask ourselves some tough questions about how we can feel truly ready for events like this. It will pay dividends. - Espionage and other forms of foreign influence are not a theory, they are a reality, at every level, as passionately espoused by the Mayor of Port Coquitlam, Brad West. We need to resist complacency on this matter, and could all take a page from his book. - The line between state-sponsored and independent cyber crime groups continues to blur. Much like using AI to respond to threat actors that leverage AI, our adversaries are forming partnerships that we need to emulate (via tighter government and private sector relationships) to respond effectively. One material example of the outcomes that can be achieved by tighter partnerships is the faster flow of intel from government entities to private sector orgs that manage critical infrastructure for maximum awareness of imminent, targeted threats against these orgs. If all of this is of interest to you, I strongly encourage you to attend next year, I know I will! #VISS
