  • Does adherence to style guidelines matter in the beer world? Historically speaking, beer styles are relatively new thing. Beers were always made in the past based on ingredients and location. It wasn't until the 1900's that we started paying attention to actual styles. To me, a traditionalist, I still believe there may be just over 100 different beer styles. In modern brewing (especially craft brewing), we notice a lot of style bending happening. This is where a brewer uses a traditional recipe and then adapts it with some twists of their own. I think this is wonderful and provides a creative framework for the brewer. However... I have run into the same argument several times over my career. A brewer makes a beer and calls it a specific style and when I taste it, it lacks the traditional aspects of the style. I am always told "it fits within the style guidelines." Perhaps but style guidelines built for judging competitions are very broad and allow for a lot of interpretation. The best gauge for 'true to style' is to compare what else is out there commercially. Consumers who enjoy a particular style may not recognize that your beer is within style guidelines and then consider it to be poorly made. Just a thought as you go down the 'innovation' path.

  • A holistic and altruistic approach doesn't mean you have to sacrifice profits or brand awareness. Just think about for a second. If we all (specifically in the beer industry) worked hard at making the industry grow and be sustainable, wouldn't everyone benefit? The old adage of high tides float all boats is true. Sadly - I see far too many self-centered approaches to selling and marketing beer and this will bode poorly for the entire industry. Granted, it's been that way for a long time but you know what they say...'if you do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result, that's the sign of insanity' For example, I know that the 'category captain' concept has been around retail for a long time in grocery and convenience but this not only takes the responsibility to understand the industry away from the retailer, it also provides one company to create a shelf set that is biased and not worth the paper it was written on. Instead, take a broader approach and find a solution that opens up a shopping experience to the consumer. If your brands are strong, they will sell. Just as a reminder - Altruism is the belief in or practice of selfless concern for the well-being of others. Being holistic is characterized by the belief that the parts of something are interconnected and can be explained only by reference to the whole. The beer industry needs a reset so that all can profit and grow not just a select few. It also needs us to all reflect to see a different path.

  • Our Level 1 program is by far the most complete entry level beer education program available. While it was originally created as a classroom learning opportunity, we were also the first to delve into e-learning. We have 3 public classes available this spring and our online program runs all year round whenever you are ready. We are rapidly gaining more brewery clients in 2024 (our 15th year of excellence in learning). We are more than happy to discount group pricing for breweries or hospitality providers. Check us out further at www.tfkbeer.com and have a look at our revamped website.
