  • Please join us in recognizing Catharina (Cat) Goossen, unit chief for BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) in the Central Okanagan, with a Certificate of Recognition for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. Cat organizes staff events and offers social support, which promotes psychological health and fosters a sense of belonging, improving staff morale and helping to reduce stress – something Cat continuously advocates for. Her initiatives help connect a provincial workforce by creating opportunity for meaningful connections as colleagues send heartfelt tokens of appreciation to one another, cultivating a positive and inclusive work environment. The return-to-work support Cat provides also plays a significant role in keeping employees informed during extended leaves, helping people feel connected and included in the organization. Supporting employees returning to work, whether after extended leave, illness, or other circumstances, is crucial for ensuring a smooth transition so that people feel welcomed, supported and ready to contribute. Upon receiving the recognition, Cat shared, “When one puts the effort to make someone else’s day and workplace better, it makes everyone’s workplace better.” The Certificate of Recognition for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace is a monthly peer recognition program that identifies and celebrates the contributions of people across PHSA who promote psychological health and safety in the workplace.

  • Please join us in celebrating Sacha Arsenault, a PHSA+ Award recipient. Six years ago, Sacha joined Stroke Services BC with a passionate drive to improve outcomes for people experiencing a stroke. She recently received a PHSA+ Award for Outstanding Leadership. Whether it's supporting her team, strategizing with partner organizations or obtaining feedback from individuals with lived stroke experience, Sacha's emphasis on human connection is consistently evident in her work. "Sacha's leadership has instilled a sense of calm, courage and strength that enables us all to sparkle as we address system challenges and design better stroke systems for our providers, patients and families. This person-centred approach has created the most high-functioning, motivated and innovative team I have had the privilege of being a part of," says Sandy Steinwender, lead, Clinical Initiatives and Innovation at Stroke Services BC. Even though her team is dispersed across the province, Sacha stresses the importance of staying connected, communicating openly and being collaborative to create a positive and productive work environment. The culture that she fosters within Stroke Services BC (SSBC) has translated to optimized stroke patient outcomes and experiences. Relationship building and open communication are often at the core of stroke care's best practices, making Sacha's leadership style a well-suited match for SSBC and their objectives. Under her leadership, multiple SSBC projects have received awards and recognition from Health Quality BC and national conferences, as well as grant funding from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. "Some of the best parts about working at SSBC are the connections we build, and the opportunities to listen to people, to understand what they need and how we can collaborate to make things better. We work with the most incredible people that I’m so lucky to learn from, including my team, PHSA colleagues, our partners and people with lived experience," shares Sacha. The PHSA+ Awards are part of an internal recognition program that celebrates teams and individuals who bring our PHSA values to life in the workplace and go above and beyond to serve patients and families across B.C.
