Today PHSA recognizes #IndigenousVeteransDay. We honour with gratitude the many First Nations, Inuit and Métis who have served, are currently serving or have lost their lives in service. Indigenous people have a long and distinguished history in the Canadian armed forces and have served courageously both in Canada and overseas. Many overcame enormous challenges to enlist, including leaving their ancestral homes, adapting to cultural differences and facing oppression and racism. Some who previously were granted status had their identity changed through status removal as a condition of service. After their service, many Indigenous veterans did not receive the same resources and support as their non-Indigenous comrades. Land misappropriated from Indigenous peoples was offered to non-Indigenous veterans, and many Indigenous service members were not able to access full veterans’ benefits and supports. On this day, we honour and celebrate Indigenous veterans, who served courageously often without receiving the recognition and support they deserved. We remember and uplift those who lost their lives in service along with their families and communities. We also acknowledge the barriers, racism and harms many Indigenous veterans faced before, during and after their service.

  • So proud of my incredible colleagues and the work we do. I am learning so much and thankful to be apart of this amazing team!

We are honoured to receive the PHSA+ Award for Indigenous-specific Anti-Racism and Cultural Safety, a recognition that comes from our colleagues at PHSA. This award reflects our Sanya'k̓ula team’s commitment to inclusivity, respect, and the upliftment of Indigenous rights, guided by our Coast Salish Teachings gifted by Knowledge Keeper Shane Pointe, Sulksun. We strive to cultivate a workplace where everyone feels they belong. As we embrace the teaching of "Nuts a maht," which reminds us that “We are one,” we acknowledge that everyone and everything has value and purpose. This interconnectedness reinforces our dedication to creating a culturally respectful and inclusive environment. As highlighted in our nomination, “The Sanya'k̓ula team confronts Indigenous-specific racism openly, validating experiences and championing changes to policies. Their dedication ensures all employees feel valued and respected.” This award serves as a powerful reminder of our collective efforts to create a supportive community. We often encourage Indigenous applicants and colleagues to share their stories, emphasizing that it’s not about boasting but about celebrating how their journeys contribute to the community. When we share our achievements, we’re telling a story of how we’ve lifted others up and supported our community—whether that’s our team, organization, or clients. Our experiences have value, impacting not just our journeys but also those we’ve worked with and the communities we’ve served. This recognition is a testament to that spirit. We are proud to celebrate this moment with PHSA President & CEO David Byres, acknowledging our collective achievement as a team
