In Durham Region, Lakeridge Health, in collaboration with Ontario Tech University, is taking a significant step forward in the evolution of health care delivery with the launch of the Partnership for Advanced Technology in Health Care (PATH). PATH seeks to leverage #artificialintelligence (#AI) to enhance patient care and improve health outcomes for Durham Region residents. As Ontario faces increasing pressure to modernize health care in light of growing populations and evolving patient needs, health systems are looking for innovative ways to address these challenges and explore AI-driven technologies. PATH brings together Lakeridge Health's clinical expertise and Ontario Tech's research capabilities to explore how AI can address these critical challenges. About us
Established in 1924, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) serves as the voice of the province’s public hospitals, supporting them through advocacy, knowledge translation and member engagement, labour relations, and data and analytics with the goal of helping hospitals build a better health system. The OHA is also attuned to the broader strategic questions facing the future of the province’s health care system and we work to ensure Ontario’s hospitals have a voice in shaping this longer-term vision.

Like other Ontario hospitals, The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) has seen a dramatic rise in patients designated Alternate Level of Care (ALC). To avoid inflated ALC counts, TOH developed workflow changes that enable more accurate reporting by ensuring alignment with the province's ALC definition – a key step aimed at addressing further ALC challenges. Since January 2024, TOH has decreased ALC volumes by more than 10 per cent. With more accurate reporting, providers can better understand the ALC population and how to support them through the hospital system and towards discharge. This allows patients to receive the right level of care in the right setting, which is essential for their recovery and overall well-being. In what is believed to be an Ontario first, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has used positron emission tomography (PET) technology to guide treatment in patients with meningiomas, a common type of benign brain tumour. Unlike MRI or CT scans, PET provides images of the metabolism of the brain tumour and surrounding bone, enabling radiation oncologists to precisely target and attack tumour cells. In the face of ongoing challenges in recruiting for positions within health care, Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre (TBRHSC) has created a promising initiative: the Indigenous Career Experience (ICE). In its fourth year, ICE aims to engage Indigenous youth by offering valuable insights into various career paths in health care and fostering a connection with TBRHSC. A key component involves reaching out to high school students before they finalize their post-secondary career choices. By offering students the opportunity to be involved in hands-on learning, the program provides an opportunity for students to get excited about a future career in health care. It also facilitates the recruitment of Indigenous staff within the health care sector. "I never realized how many different career paths there are in health care until today. The Indigenous Career Experience opened my eyes to opportunities I didn't know existed, and I feel inspired to pursue a future where I can help my community and make a difference," said Aaron Klement, a grade 10 student who participated in ICE.
