Ocean Networks Canada delegates at the #AGU24 conference in Washington, DC have been pleased to discuss a few of our ongoing initiatives. - Martin Scherwath explained the benefits of solid carbon and utilizing the ocean crust as the largest and most durable C02 removal reservoir. Scherwath had a second poster at AGU on the advantages continuous monitoring through ocean observatories in seep, vent and carbon transport monitoring. - Nick Hammar shared how ONC is supporting Ocean Week Canada as an initiative to grow World Ocean Day globally, and this type of initiative can be used by others to celebrate our ocean. - Alex Slonimer detailed how internal compasses in ONC’s ADCPs are capable of detecting variation in Earth’s magnetic field, including disturbances caused by solar flares. This network of sensors can be used to complement and fill gaps in land-based magnetometer data. - Sean Tippett shared that to bridge the gap between data repositories and Indigenous data sovereignty, ONC is pursuing local contexts for partner communities to exert control over a direct way to communicate with data users. #knowtheocean

17 years of ocean intelligence: bringing real-time continuous open data to the surface for science, society & industry.
About us
Ocean Networks Canada monitors the east and west coasts of Canada and the Arctic, collecting real-time, open data that deliver solutions for science, society, and industry. bit.ly/m/Ocean-Networks-Canada Long-term continuous scientific data from the ocean environment are gathered by ONC and made available for free through Oceans 3.0 - our powerful online data management system. The science enabled by ONC includes understanding human-induced changed, life in diverse environments, interconnections among the seafloor, ocean and atmosphere and seafloor and sediment in motion. ONC is also developing an earthquake early warning system for the Government of British Columbia. Ocean Networks Canada is an initiative of the University of Victoria, funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Government of Canada, Government of British Columbia, CANARIE, and IBM Canada.

Check it out! Canada’s newest remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was put through its paces during its first deep-sea trial to conduct maintenance on Ocean Networks Canada’s major observatory, NEPTUNE, off the coast of Vancouver Island. Canpac Marine Services Inc.’s purpose-built for science ‘droid of the deep’ successfully supported instrument swap-outs, installs, and heavy lifts at ONC research sites, thousands of metres under the sea surface. Come aboard and explore the NE Pacific Ocean in our new #ONCabyss Fall 2024 Expedition StoryMap! https://arcg.is/nv94W #knowtheocean

ONC is attending the ArcticNet conference this week in Ottawa! Zarah Zheng and Steve Mihaly are presenting 12 years of data from #CambridgeBay. Stop by the ONC booth to learn more from our experts and pick up your copy of the 2025 ONC calendar before they run out! #KnowTheOcean
Steve Mihaly and I are presenting a poster on an overview of 12 years of Cambridge Bay observatory data collected by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) at ArcticNet this week! In 2018, I had the privilege to stay overnight in Qikiqtarjuaq, Nuvavut during a research expedition onboard CCGS/NGCC Amundsen vessel. I visited the beautiful town and made friends with the Inuit kids ☺️ (p3 is a kid played with my camera and took picture of another kid and me). I am happy that I am working with Arctic ocean data again after 6 years! ONC has deployed a cabled observatory in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in partnership with the local community since 2012. The monitoring platform streams high frequency live data of water properties, ice profiler, hydrophone and camera. Come stop by our poster 5-7pm Tuesday/Wednesday at Canada Hall! Also check out a talk presented by our Community Engagement Specialist Jessy Phillips about ONC’s engagement activities with the Cambridge Bay community at 4:15pm on Thursday in Room 214. Thank you ArcticNet for providing such an amazing platform to connect the local communities and researchers together, and to better understand the Arctic ecosystem and community’s needs in this era of accelerating climate change.

Last month, ONC's Folger Pinnacle research site captured this Giant Pacific Octopus battling strong currents during the #BombCyclone. ONC’s real-time observatories allow us to see the immediate impacts of extreme weather events like this. By combining this with long-term data, we can compare conditions before and after these events, offering deeper insights into their effects. Learn how the #BombCyclone impacted Folger Pinnacle 🐙 bit.ly/4gonmda #KnowTheOcean #CFIfunded

Current University of Victoria Faculty of Fine Arts graduate students are invited to apply for the ONC and UVic Faculty of Fine Arts co-sponsored #ArtScience Fellowship. The ArtScience Fellowship aims to strengthen and explore connections between art and #ocean science. The program broadens and cross-fertilizes perspectives and critical discourse on major issues including the environment, technology, oceans, culture, climate, biodiversity, and healthy communities. This fellowship is open to all current UVic Faculty of Fine Arts graduate students who have completed most of their Faculty of Fine Arts course requirements, with practice in any visual, written, musical or performance media.
