  • Genetic testing myth vs fact! A common misconception of genetic testing for personalized nutrition is that the information provided is too complicated and difficult for practitioners and their clients to understand. Because of this, you may see claims that genetic testing is not a useful tool for helping clients make positive changes to their lifestyle, health, and wellbeing. However, research has shown that when clients receive personalized nutrition and lifestyle recommendations based on evidence-based genetic markers like the ones analyzed by Nutrigenomix, their understanding, motivation, and adherence to the recommendations actually improve!* With Nutrigenomix, you can provide your clients with personalized, actionable recommendations that help them reach their health, fitness, and wellness goals. • Meet Stephanie Hnatiuk, our Senior Manager of Clinician Services at Nutrigenomix! Stephanie is a Registered Dietitian, Diabetes Educator, and Certified Personal Trainer. She completed her Bachelor’s degree and Dietetic Internship through the University of Manitoba, and has been a long time Nutrigenomix practitioner. Stephanie is also the owner of her own nutrition business - Stephanie Hnatiuk Performance Nutrition, you can find her at @steph.the.runners.dietitian on Instagram. A few fun facts about Steph: She played the drums in high school (and still has a full drum set in her basement!), and if she weren’t a dietitian, she would be a DJ. We asked Steph to tell us how genetic testing has impacted her diet and lifestyle, and this is what she said: “There are a number of ways, but the first one that comes to mind is my choline intake! As a runner, muscle recovery after training is super important to me. I am in the ‘elevated risk’ group when it comes to muscle damage while consuming a low-choline diet. Since this effect was specifically found in women, I know as a female athlete I need to stay on top of getting enough choline in my diet on a consistent basis.” Would you like to learn more about how you can use Nutrigenomix in your practice to help your clients optimize their nutrition for better health and wellness? • Curious about which genes can impact eating habits, and how they can influence your client’s food choices? - CD36: Is involved in the transport of fat from the blood. Variations in this gene have been linked to differences in perception of the taste and texture of fats and oils. - GLUT2: Plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels in the body. Those who possess the risk variant of this gene have a greater preference for sweet foods and beverages and are more likely to over-consume sugar. - MC4R: Codes for the melanocortin 4 receptor, which is found in the hypothalamus region of the brain and is involved in appetite regulation and hunger cues. Individuals with the risk variant are more likely to eat between meals often and have a heightened appetite. Knowing your clients’ genetics and understanding how they can impact their eating behaviors can enable you to provide more targeted and personalized nutrition advice! • Why do some individuals gain muscle and strength more easily than others? One of the reasons is in our genes! Research shows that the ACTN3 gene plays a major role in genetic predisposition to excelling in strength and power-based activities. The ACTN3 gene encodes the alpha-actinin-3 protein, which is only expressed in fast twitch muscle fibers. Therefore, certain variations in this gene can be beneficial for exercises or activities requiring strength and power. In particular, individuals with the CC or TC variant of ACTN3 gene are more likely to excel at strength-based activities. Additionally, research shows that variation in the ACTN3 gene influences one’s susceptibility to muscle damage after prolonged, strenuous or unaccustomed exercise. The type of exercise inducing the greatest muscle damage is most often a high-intensity resistance or power-type exercise. Individuals who carry at least one copy of the T allele (TC or TT genotype) produce a lower functioning ACTN3 protein that has been linked to increased risk of muscle damage. This means that those with the TC or TT genotype should take care to optimize their recovery between training sessions and avoid excessive strenuous exercise as this can interfere with their ability to reach their strength and power potential. • What can genes reveal about the best strategies to optimize weight and body composition? The FTO gene is known as the ‘fat mass and obesity-associated’ gene and can impact weight management and body composition. This gene’s role in the body is related to metabolic rate, energy expenditure and energy balance. It is also expressed in regions of the brain that are involved in the regulation of energy intake. Numerous studies show that a variant in the FTO gene (AA) is associated with increased risk of obesity. However, research also shows that specific dietary and physical activity recommendations can substantially help with weight loss and weight maintenance in individuals with the AA variant of the FTO gene. For example, engaging in physical activity reduces the risk of obesity by as much as 75% for those with the elevated risk variant of the FTO gene (Andreasen et al. 2008), (Reddon et al. 2016). In addition to physical activity, variations in the FTO gene can also influence our response to different dietary interventions including a higher protein diet, and the amounts and types of dietary fats. Understanding your clients’ genetics can help you provide more effective and personalized lifestyle recommendations that can increase motivation and lead to long-term sustainable changes.
