About us

NLPatent is an industry leading AI-based patent search and analytics platform trusted by Fortune 500 companies, Am Law 100 firms, and research universities around the world. The platform takes an AI-first approach to patent search; it's built from a proprietary Large Language Model trained on patent data to truly understand the language of patents and innovation. Users simply describe their invention in full sentences and conceptually relevant results are generated instantly; consistently outperforming human experts on speed and accuracy. The system is simple, intuitive, and iterative. Best of all, it explains the relevant sections of each patent it identifies, removing the "black box" often experienced by other AI-based platforms.

  • Imagine Harry Potter in the Triwizard Tournament maze 🧩🧙 - no wand, no map, and no help. Even the most talented wizard would struggle to find the path to victory. Navigating the provision of essential IP and commercialization services for innovators across Canada felt much the same for the IP Innovation Clinic at York University - like juggling diverse technologies amidst overwhelming demand. For Dr. Joseph F. Turcotte, PhD and his team at the Clinic, NLPatent became their magic wand - an AI-powered solution that turned challenges into opportunities and obstacles into stepping stones.⚡ With NLPatent’s intuitive platform at their disposal, the Clinic’s first challenge was to analyze the patentability and commercialization potential for a health tech innovation devised by a university professor. By inputting the invention description gathered from interviews in “plain” language, and using the Refine feature, the clinic quickly uncovered precise and relevant references - bypassing the complexity and time-consuming process they were used to. They transformed these insights into a detailed memo, guiding the inventor and the University’s commercialization managers in strategic R&D budgeting and market positioning. By leveraging NLPatent, the Clinic not only reduced its backlog but also empowered non-specialists to engage meaningfully in patent research, making innovation more accessible for Canadian inventors. 🍁 Be like Joseph. Use NLPatent as your magic wand to unlock innovation insights driven by IP Intelligence, empowering your team to make strategic decisions like a well-versed wizard. 🪄 Read the full case study in the link in comments! 🔗

2024 was a wild and wonderful ride, and I have a fun little story to share about the journey. Between growing a business, raising a two-year-old, and living the not-so-average life of a 36-year-old woman (*gasps* hopefully I look younger, though my increasingly sparkly grey hairs might argue otherwise!), it’s been a year to remember. Heads down, working hard alongside an incredibly motivated and supportive team, I was humbled to receive some amazing recognitions this year (*blushes* cue parenthetical emotions!). One that stood out was being named a “One to Watch” by Women of Influence+. This one meant a lot to me - the vetting process was thorough and required several references (shoutout to Andrew O., Marc Shewchun, and Neil Grunberg!!!), but it made the honour feel even more meaningful. At the awards gala, dressed in a vibrant “NLPatent Orange” dress (shoutout to The Fitzroy for the rental, lots of people asked!), I had the chance to connect with SO many wonderful, inspiring women. One standout moment was meeting Chef Nuit and her husband Jeff, the lovely humans behind Pai restaurant in Toronto - one of my all-time favourite spots. Seriously, I tell everyone their Thai food is better than Thailand (yes, I said it! The Michelin guide agrees, for those that question my taste). Last week, I had the privilege of hosting our Canadian team for a holiday dinner at Pai. While we enjoyed a Michelin-recommended meal, I shared Chef Nuit’s inspiring story. On a packed Friday night, she and Jeff rolled out the red carpet for us - just because of a random connection at the gala. The point of this post (besides “check out Pai!” - https://lnkd.in/efSA9pyx) is this: Every journey has a story, and along the way, you meet incredible people who make it all the richer. From me (and the NLPatent team!) to you - keep your heart and mind open, put yourself out there, and embrace the wonders of the holiday season!! ✨✨✨

2023 > 2024: A lot has changed in the world of #legaltech (though apparently, not my dress! 😂). Last year at the TLTF Summit, I rushed through the hall right after pitching NLPatent as a finalist in the Startup Showcase. On my way, I was stopped for a quick interview, and the interviewer asked for my 2024 legal tech prediction 🔮. Without missing a beat, I predicted that 2024 would be the year for #IP. Language-based #AI technologies were booming, the market sentiment was shifting, and we were seeing unprecedented traction. So, was I right? I think so! This year, walking through the halls at the TLTF Summit (and pretty much every conference I attended in 2024), I met more IP tech companies than ever before – and more IP professionals looking to buy. It’s been an incredible year for our business, and this uptick in new entrants only validates what we’ve been doing. Especially when you consider we got started "before AI was cool" 😎. Now, looking into my crystal ball for next year, I have another prediction. And if you’re still reading, I’ll assume you’re curious to hear it… 2025 will be the year for rollups & partnerships (especially in IP). Lots of great companies are gaining traction, and I think we’ll see many of them combine and merge with bigger players who see the writing on the wall - AI isn't going away. Will I be right? I guess we’ll have to wait until I don my "TLTF Summit uniform" again next year to find out! 😉 In the meantime, I would love to hear what you think!! 💡 #TLTFSummit2024 Steve Obenski Zach Posner Casey Lynn Tierney, CFA, CPA Lang Andrew Forman Nehal Madhani Brian Donato Kristine McKinney Adrian C.
