First-line shelter for women and children fleeing immediate violence.
About us
Nelson House is dedicated to providing all persons who identify as women and their children shelter, support and information so they can take steps towards ending violence in their lives. Nelson House is a 15-bed emergency shelter with 11 private bedrooms. We provide a home for the women and their children – who stay with us for approximately three months – until we find appropriate housing for them. During their stay, we provide them with all the necessities they might need (new bedding, clothes, school supplies, toiletries, baby supplies, prescriptions not covered by OHIP, loaded Presto cards, and anything else they might need). In addition to shelter clients, we support women and children through our Transitional Support Program in the community. The shelter’s Transitional Support Program clients have access to counselling services and programs. The Crisis line answers more than 1000 calls annually, responding to the needs of women in crisis by providing support and information on safety planning, access to community services, and advocating for women to find a safe place to stay. We provide a range of holistic services to our shelter and Transitional Support Program clients. Our services and programs include 24-hour crisis assistance, individual and group-based counselling support, children and youth support programs, skills exchange programs, as well as legal, housing, and immigration support and advocacy. Every life lost to femicide is a call to action. The 2023-2024 OAITH Annual Femicide List reports an alarming rise in femicides across Ontario, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change. Each name represents a life taken, a family devastated, and a community grieving. It’s time to take action against gender-based violence. Learn more and join the fight to protect women and gender-diverse individuals in our communities. Nelson House stands in solidarity with gender justice advocates and organizations calling for decisive action to end intimate partner violence. On this 35th anniversary of the École Polytechnique Massacre, we join the demand to pass Bill 173: Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic Act, 2024, recognizing this public health crisis and ensuring safety for all Ontarians. Together, we can build a future free from gender-based violence. #EndGBV #Bill173 #16DaysOfActivism

Today, we pause to remember the 14 women whose lives were tragically taken at École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women reminds us of the ongoing fight to end gender-based violence. We remember: Geneviève Bergeron Hélène Colgan Nathalie Croteau Barbara Daigneault Anne-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Maryse Laganière Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Sonia Pelletier Michèle Richard Annie St-Arneault Annie Turcotte Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz Let us honor their memory by standing together, advocating for change, and supporting survivors. At Nelson House, we remain committed to creating a safer, more equitable future for women and children. #EndGBV #NationalDayofRemembrance #16DaysOfActivism
