Limberlost Place, a project designed by MTA and Acton Ostry Architects Inc. that is currently under construction at George Brown College, is a prime exemplar of how the City of Toronto is embracing a new wave of sustainable architecture with innovative mass timber buildings. Thank you to blogTO for sharing the following article which highlights the quality of architecture of Limberlost Place as well as the T3 Bayside project designed by 3XN/GXN and WZMH Architects. “Recent changes to the Ontario Building Code have allowed developers to utilize this innovative building medium to push the boundaries of sustainable construction, resulting in a wave of new large-scale wood-framed structures in Toronto. A pair of mass-timber buildings now stand as showpieces in one of Toronto's newest neighbourhoods, and is just an appetizer for even more ambitious wood towers in the pipeline.” – Jack Landau, blogTO Both of these projects represent a push for change in the way of sustainable building design and how we should all consider large-scale construction as we move toward a more resilient and climate-conscious future. Limberlost Place features advanced timber technology that permitted the structure to reach 10 storeys in height, which upon completion in 2025 will stand as the city’s tallest mass timber institutional building. Olivia Keung, Associate at MTA, was a featured guest at the Building Equality in Architecture Toronto (BEAT) Leadership Seminar this past weekend! The event began at T3 Bayside - Toronto, where Olivia and Dima Cook of EVOQ Architecture, Kendra Kusick of Teeple Architects Inc., Jennifer Davis, OAA, NSAA, MRAIC of WZMH Architects, and Sophie Tremblay of LGA Architectural Partners, spoke on their own experiences in pursuing technical specialties in design, and how doing so can lead to fulfilling career pathways for women in architecture. Following this, Olivia led participants on a tour of Moriyama Teshima Architects’ Toronto studio. She provided a personal and in-depth look at how our practice functions, and fielded questions related to project work, design production, and sustainability metrics for buildings under construction today. "The work that BEAT does to promote equity for women in architectural practices is so important as we continue to push for change. It was an honour to share the stage with these talented leaders to highlight the need for greater representation in technical areas and the agency we have to enact change through our expertise." – Olivia Keung, Moriyama Teshima Architects #moriyamateshima #beat #beato #architect #architecture #canadianarchitecture #canadianarchitect #torontoarchitect #torontoarchitecture #ontarioarchitect #ontarioarchitecture #technical #technology #architecturaltechnology #architecturaldesign #design #designer #designprofessional #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #sustainablebuilding #buildingdesign #masstimber #construction #toronto #ontario #canada #mtarch

MTA is pleased to take part in Preservation? Modernist Heritage and Modern Toronto Symposium, happening over a 2-day period later this month at the University of Toronto - John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. This event is centred around the challenges of preserving Modern architectural heritage in rapidly growing cities like Toronto, where accelerated development, gentrification, high demand for housing and urban expansion pose significant threats. On Saturday November 23rd, Session 2 Modern Heritage at Risk in Toronto The Cases of Ontario Place and the Ontario Science Centre will take place in the morning, including presentations by Margaret Zeidler, of Urbanspace Property Group, Jane Wolff of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, Floyd Ruskin of “Save the Science Centre” grassroots group, and MTA Partner Brian Rudy (pictured), who will speak beginning at 11:10AM on the Architecture of firm founder Raymond Moriyama’s landmark building, the Ontario Science Centre. Our team has been active in the discussion of preserving the original Science Centre building, located in Don Mills, not only for the significant cultural and architectural value it represents to our city but also as a key piece of community infrastructure that promotes education, activity, and a connection to nature for all ages to enjoy. MTA Partner Carol Phillips presented at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) North Central 2024 Regional Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she discussed the ways in which higher education institutions must lead by example to promote widespread adoption of carbon sequestering mass timber while also delivering an enriched student experience. Alongside Nerys Rau of George Brown College, Mike Love of PCL Construction, and Ted (Edward K.) Watson of MJMA Architecture & Design, Carol used Limberlost Place at George Brown College (our joint project with Acton Acton Ostry Architects Inc.) as a case study to explore the benefits and challenges of employing mass timber as a structural system in large-scale building projects, particularly from the lens of design, manufacturing, and policy. "For me, it was of particular value to be able to stand together with the client, the contractor, and other architects working in the mass timber higher education space to actively and openly share knowledge. Our hope is that all of our low-carbon buildings are a success – and if sharing our own journey that includes challenges and lessons can demystify and de-risk projects for others, that is a win for better building solutions and the planet." – Carol Phillips, Moriyama Teshima Architects #moriyamateshima #scupconference #scupnorthcentral #scupconference2024 #scup2024 #college #collegecampus #university #universitycampus #campus #campusplanning #campusdesign #postsecondary #postsecondaryarchitecture #postsecondarycampus #planning #urbanplanning #architecture #design #architecturaldesign #sustainability #sustainable #architect #torontoarchitect #canadianarchitect #limberlostplace #masstimber #mtarch

Limberlost Place, a building currently under construction at George Brown College’s Waterfront Campus in Toronto, has won a 2024 LOOP Design Awards in the Eco & Sustainable Concept category! The aspirational design of this project, completed with Acton Ostry Architects Inc., has introduced mass timber into the Toronto lexicon of public buildings and will achieve sustainability targets well in advance of the city’s step plan to 2030 carbon reductions. The higher education facility’s exposed mass timber in a space where the assembly occupancies and the teaching spaces occupy the full verticality of the building, as well as the exceptionally efficient, prefabricated envelope system, make it unique. The team’s hope is that once Limberlost Place is complete and occupied, the inhabitants will be influenced by the visible intuitive operations, use of renewable materials, and low- and high-tech approaches to sustainability. Thank you to everyone who cast a vote in favour of this project! https://lnkd.in/g3GMJS3F PCL Construction | Fast + Epp | Transsolar KlimaEngineering | Introba | Morrison Hershfield | Stantec | Nordic Structures | 📸 Salina Kassam Photography #moriyamateshima #actonostry #limberlostplace #georgebrowncollege #loopdesignaward #loop2024 #masstimber #timber #wood #woodbuilding #buildingwithwood #construction #torontoconstruction #torontoarchitecture #sustainable #sustainability #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #buildingdesign #greenbuilding #architectureaward #architect #architecture #torontoarchitect #canadianarchitect #canadianarchitecture #mtarch

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) Headquarters and Multi-Tenant Commercial Building has won a 2024 LOOP Design Awards in the Architecture: Offices category! This project, MTA’s first completed mass timber building, is a highly sustainable, financially viable, and innovative new workplace for the leaders of the OSSTF — an organization that represents all education professionals in the secondary school system in Ontario. Joined by a central atrium, the building offers abundant outside views, light, openness, and numerous opportunities for spontaneous interactions between the OSSTF staff and tenants. Every design decision was led through the lens of OSSTF’s values, propelled by the vision of creating a facility made from a renewable resource that sequesters carbon from the atmosphere and is harvested from Canadian-owned industries under sustainable regulations. This has resulted in a building design that is warm, welcoming, and inclusive and is thoughtfully connected to the natural beauty of its surroundings. The Hazel McCallion Campus Student Centre (HMCSC or “Phase 2A”) at Sheridan College has won a 2024 LOOP Design Awards in the Architecture: Public Buildings & Institutional category! A collaboration with Montgomery Sisam Architects, this project houses a fitness centre, gymnasium, and running track, as well as study spaces, food outlets, and administrative spaces. In designing this social and wellness centre, connections were maximized between large, open, multipurpose spaces and smaller, more defined program spaces, indoor amenities, and outdoor amenities. These quality outdoor spaces support the desire for intensification and animate the public realm while supporting a strong student community. HMCSC has fortified the campus’s identity and strengthened a sense of place within Mississauga.
