More Transit Southern Ontario (MTSO) is a volunteer organization founded in 2023 that advocates for safer, frequent, reliable and integrated transit networks for riders across Southern Ontario. From communicating with the public to publishing our own detailed reports on transit infrastructure, MTSO is ensuring that transit riders across the GTHA and beyond have a voice to improve their transit systems. We advocate to build affordable housing near transit routes and stations to deliver reliable transportation to existing and future communities. MTSO collaborates with members from other transit advocacy groups and local organizations to push forward new initiatives and campaigns that support these objectives. What did MTSO learn from the Transit for Tomorrow summit? Here’s a short summary: 💵 Funding Models: The summit highlighted a broken funding model reliant on farebox revenue, we need to call for more stable provincial and federal support. Accelerating the Canada Transit Fund before its 2026 implementation is one key goal of this. 🚍 Service Equity: There are significant disparities in transit access, especially for low-income and rural populations and those who use para-transit have unequal access/service quality. 👔 Political Engagement: Questions were raised about how to engage politicians who do not prioritize transit. We need to use the experiences and voices of people to show why transit is essential and need to evolve with the needs of people.
We’re at the Transit for Tomorrow Summit in Ottawa! We’ve listened to multiple speakers emphasizing the need for operating funding and to prioritize transit as an investment in Canadians and municipalities. Currently we are listening into Équiterre and Environmental Defence’s conversation about how we can unlock the power of public transit to reduce carbon emissions in Canada. It’s Canada Transit Action Week and riders in Guelph and Cambridge continue to have long commutes using public transit between the two municipalities as there is no direct connection. MTSO wants to advocate to operate a GO bus direct service between Guelph Central to Cambridge Centre or Ainslie Terminal in order to promote regional connectivity and improve travel times for transit riders.
