Average US$ Household Expenses: #Transportation = 17% Housing = 33% With housing #affordability being such a key issue in so many places, less #transport costs, of which 94% go to purchasing and maintaining #vehicles, can be repurposed for their household good. This is the case for both #urban and #rural households. While urban averages 1.7 vehicles and rural 2.5 vehicles, the % of total expenditures is 16.5% for #urban and 19.3% for #rural. These aren't just #metrics from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). These are #signals of a longstanding #carcentric habit of #landuse and transportation planning. Do you want to know what is not the end of an era? Special events = record-breaking #transit ridership Just like we experienced for the 2010 #Olympic Winter Games here in Vancouver, TransLink experienced a new system-wide ridership record when our region hosted Taylor Swift concerts alongside other major #events in our downtown. https://lnkd.in/dK7s7MzS And just like for the Games, there was a special #WestCoastExpress evening train to help people get home after the #specialevents. This once again proves that we need our delightful #commutertrain to provide all-day service, weekdays and weekends. With FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States coming soon, we need to keep leveraging the opportunity in our region to show the value of #transit. We have a vision for more #transit; people respond when we give them a service that will be as good as driving. In summary, this is not the end of an era of breaking #transitridership goals. We need all the adults in the room not only to admit their lack of care for others while they #drive but also to have accountability for their privilege to use a #car. #Speeding is not acceptable #Texting while driving is not acceptable #Driving and reading email is not acceptable #Managing your phone while driving is not acceptable --How are the adults in the room doing right now?-- "many drivers reported sending a text/email (27%), reading a text/email (37%), or holding and talking on a phone (36%) while driving in the past 30 days." Taken from a recent AAA survey, we continue to not talk about the elephant in the room regarding #roadsafety. Personal #Mobility preferences are changing: - traditional #bike is down from 91% to 74% - #electricbike is up from 5% to 16% - #escooters are up from less than 1% to 4% - shared #bikes are up from 1% to 3% https://lnkd.in/gxsSFX9x In summary, the #acoustic bike went down by 17% while #ebike use went up 11%, #escooters went from nothing to 3%, and #sharedbikes rose another 2%. Most important about these findings is that people have more personal #mobility choices. Despite its smaller percentage, the traditional #bike remains an integral part of our mobility #ecosystem. The presence of more #mobility options gives people more opportunity to choose #activetravel modes. "fully flexible #parking could lead to more new homes—more than other #landuse reforms combined" As a #strategicadvisor, most recently supporting the City of Kelowna exploring #parkingreform, I find this article timely. Many cities struggle with transitioning to higher #densities and with their long-term memories of the historic amounts of #parking they provide.
