Mangrove Lithium, a Vancouver based Company, has developed a breakthrough platform for the most cost-effective production of battery grade lithium hydroxide from diverse input streams and assets. Mangrove’s modular solution can be scaled to any capacity and co-located with upstream lithium producers or cathode and cell manufacturers. The platform technology is also being commercialized for conversion of waste brines to chemicals and desalinated water.

An interesting article by Exponent outlining the upcoming challenges critical mineral regulations will present to the lithium battery value chain. The article outlines 4 main key challenges, regulatory interoperation, data resourcing and validation, data governance, and materials processing alignment. With initiatives like TRACE, the EU Battery Passport, and others, these challenges will be especially true for the lithium supply chain. As espoused in many of our other posts, having sustainable domestic lithium conversion capacity will be key in meeting the requirement for mandates set forth by the local governing authorities. As the industry adapts to these evolving regulations, manufacturers must prioritize transparency, circularity, and carbon accounting. Proactive compliance will not only help them meet regulatory demands but also position them competitively in a market increasingly focused on sustainability. Stakeholders that prepare for these changes now will lead the transition toward a more responsible battery lifecycle. Creating a more efficient, sustainable and expedient way of extracting lithium will be increasingly important as the demand for renewable energy continues to rise. Fortunately, as outlined in this BNN Bloomberg article by Annie Lee, there are many new methods and technologies being developed and implemented to remove hurdles in upstream extraction to address this. However, extraction is just one piece of the puzzle. Before that extracted lithium can be used in batteries, it must first be refined and converted into a battery grade product – a step where the traditional method has its own efficiency and environmental challenges with it as well. Just like extraction, however, innovative ways of refining lithium are being developed. Mangrove has created a midstream conversion system that addresses all of the concerns of traditional refining. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently released its roadmap for how the 200 countries who pledged to triple their renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade can meet their targets. It’s an ambitious goal that has been set, but with the innovation and investments being made in the renewable energy sector, it is entirely feasible. Aside for the need for a significant upgrade in the power grid infrastructure, the other area where significant increases need to occur is in energy storage systems. Justine Calma from The Verge reports “Tripling renewable energy capacity around the world also requires a lot more storage, since wind and solar generation fluctuates. It’ll be crucial to save some excess energy for times when the sun doesn’t shine and winds wane. Power grids would need to add 1,500 gigawatts of energy storage, most of that in the form of batteries, according to the report. That’s a nearly 15-fold increase compared to today.” With this increased demand for battery energy storage capacity, there will also be an increase demand in battery-grade lithium. With current bottlenecks in the supply chain to efficiently produce sustainable lithium hydroxide, particularly at the mid-stream refining steps, more consideration needs to be made to creating domestic lithium refining capacity. Decentralizing lithium refining capacity will be paramount as the lithium market grows out of its current slump and demand outpaces the supply. An electrochemical solution like Mangrove, which is lower cost, feedstock flexible, creates no waste by-products, and has a lower carbon footprint, could work and co-locate with upstream producers, downstream manufactures, and end of life recyclers to decentralize refining and create domestic and sustainable lithium supply chains. https://lnkd.in/gk7veX78
