Back in May 2023, Gail Jacob Barker and I hosted a Community Dialogue for leaders and change makers to come together and be in conversation around issues related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Feedback from the session was so positive. We got a clear message that folx needed and wanted more spaces where they were welcomed with care and invited into thoughtful and provocative dialogue. Gail and I have planned another Community Dialogue, this time a series of 3 sessions starting June 19th from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm at Innovation Works. We continue to grapple with the tender and hard topic of Whiteness – this time Living Into a New Story as our theme where we will reflect on where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we are headed when it comes to to doing meaningful work Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. In my work around equity-centred leadership, I have noticed how it can at times be difficult for White-identified leaders and change-makers to be in conversation around race. Shame walks through the front door and makes themselves at home and ZAP! There’s a reaction. Anything to get rid of the discomfort. We become wobbly, unsure. In an increasingly polarized world, the journey to creating healthy, inclusive, and equity-driven workplaces has never been more critical. How do we, as White-identified leaders, and change-makers, build our emotional literacy to respond versus react? This is one of the topics we will explore in my new offering Grappling with Whiteness, a 3-session program to support leaders in an embodied exploration of Whiteness in their leadership. Last year, just as I felt my work was finally coming together as I’d hoped, I was knocked down. And then again. And one more time for good measure. It took my breath away. But it also got me asking critical questions about my work with leaders and what’s needed. What I realized is this: if you’re a White-identified leader, you’re being called to step into your leadership in ways that will transform the workplace and create systemic equity in your organization – and if leaders are to do this deep inner work, they need a compassionate space to be with their discomfort, their questions, and all of who they are at this moment, while being accountable for their learning and actions. That’s why I have developed a new coaching program for White-identified leaders ready to do their work: Equity from the Inside Out Leadership Coaching Program. I have a new offering starting April 2nd for White-identified leaders and change makers feeling stuck in their DEI and anti-racism work. It’s a 3-session program where White-identified leaders and change makers engage in an embodied exploration of Whiteness in their leadership. Beyond books and training, this program is an invitation into a courageous and compassionate guided journey for White-identified folx to access their bodies’ wisdom, drop their armour, and move beyond performative allyship – from awareness to action. We will use the awareness-based systems change practices from Social Presencing Theatre to engage in this exploration.
