The career engagement model by Deirdre Pickerell and Roberta Borgen highlights the dynamic, ever-changing interactions between challenge and capacity. The challenge component is seen from a confluence of motivating work and meaningful opportunities, while the capacity component comprises resources, relationships, workload, well-being and fit. The intersection of challenge and capacity will result in greater engagement by the staff member and the further apart the interaction, the greater the disengagement. A question worth reflecting is what should societies, organisations and individuals do to create that zone of engagement?
