‘Tis the season… to save waste! 🎄☃️ Here are 3 things I’m doing to cut down waste this year: 1️⃣ Minimizing food waste – Feeding the crowd and the creativity. Leftovers? Turn them into soups, stocks, or other unique dishes. Nothing gets tossed! 2️⃣ Rethinking packaging – Forget single-use wrapping paper. Scarves, cloth napkins, or saved brown paper from packages (with a reusable bow) are stylish and sustainable. 3️⃣ Gifting smarter – Consumables and experiences win every time. Homemade hot chocolate in a glass jar? Dinner and a show? Less waste, more joy. What are your go-to ways to reduce holiday waste?

During IAAPA Expo 2024, we demonstrated our commitment to sustainability by taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact. Partnering with O-Town Compost and with the help of the Oscar units, sponsored by Intuitive AI, we successfully diverted 5,480 pounds of food waste from landfills! Instead of going to waste, this was transformed into nutrient-rich compost to benefit the local farming community.

🌍 Recycling Matters: PET Edition ♻️ - PLASTICS Did you know PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is the backbone of polyester used in packaging(Plastic Bottles) and textiles(Clothes)? 🧴👗 These two industries are a couple of largest users of PET. ♻️ We all buy them. 🔄 Textile Recycling Challenge The textile industry predominantly sources recycled PET (rPET) from POST-CONSUMER PET bottles, NOT textiles. Why? Because recycling textiles back into fibers is still a complex challenge. This highlights a significant gap in textile-to-textile recycling processes. So who uses more? Take a read...https://lnkd.in/ggsAkrqY 🌊 Micro Plastic Challenge Synthetic textiles are one of the largest sources of microplastics in the ocean, contributing 35% of the total volume. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other plastic-based fibers make up close to 60% 😱 of the materials used in clothing today. 📊 Recycling Rates (USA): PET Bottles: 30% PET Textiles: 14% If we want them to use more recycled materials, we need to recycle their products. 🌟 Norway Sets the Gold Standard: With a greater than 90% PET bottle recycling rate (2018), Norway leads the world! 🏆 #Sustainability #Recycling #PET #TextileRecycling #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction The Recycling Partnership, Systemiq Ltd., Closed Loop Partners, Eunomia Research & Consulting

While in the Portland, OR for Thanksgiving, I got a chance to test Oscar Sort: Zero-Touch, Zero-Waste Stations from Intuitive AI. This AI-based system will inform users which bins to use to dispose of their various wastes. Sorting of waste at the point source is an excellent way to facilitate downstream recycling strategies. I was also amazed to learn that the Moda Centre, which is home to the National Basketball Association (NBA) Portland Trail Blazers @ the Rose Quarter, has implemented the first full-venue reuse program within US professional sports: https://lnkd.in/g3E6Xjp8 This partnership with Bold Reuse is providing proof of concept that reuse and recycling programs can be implemented into mainstream society and serves as an example for future sustainability efforts. For those of you that are concerned, Oscar does remind users to ensure their beer and cocktail glasses are empty prior to discarding.🍻 #cleantech #cleantechnologies #appliedresearch #circulareconony #circularplastics

What’s wrong with this message? “Don’t forget to empty your food waste from your container into the compost bin - every action helps our zero waste goals.” It’s too wordy for busy spaces. People spend a second deciding at the bin, and evidence shows long, “empathetic” instructions fall flat. Clear, direct messaging works better: “Compost food. Trash the container.” What’s the most common recycling message you see? It might be time for a refresh.

Huge kudos to Megan Roche , Amy Ward , Jocelyn Alexander , Jules Baldwin, Lorne W. Nelson, SCMP, CSCP , Megan McClure, Heidi Crites, and the all the members of the YYC Waste Strategy Working Group for getting Oscar rolled out at YYC. We’ve got four different sorting options at YYC and all our food vendors have compostable or recyclable packaging options. If you don’t know where to put what you’re done with Oscar by Intuitive AI can help! Look for them in Concourse C, by Deville Coffee and in the international food court.
