Improving health and health equity by understanding and influencing the complex conditions that impact community health.
About us
The Healthy Populations Institute (HPI) was established in 1993 as a Senate-approved research institute at Dalhousie University. Through excellence in research, capacity building, and knowledge translation, HPI has been a leader in health promotion research in Atlantic Canada and beyond. It is within this context of exceptional research grant capture, and interdisciplinary, collaborative, policy and program-focused health promotion research, that HPI has undergone a renewal process: reflecting on our past, visioning our future, and developing a plan for continued success. As part of this renewal we have re-committed ourselves to policy and program-focused research, but also recognize the need to highlight more explicitly our ‘upstream research’, that is research which addresses the fundamental causes of unhealthy lives and communities. HPI places a special emphasis on informing policies and practices that can reduce the economic challenges facing the healthcare system. Vision: Healthy populations throughout the life-course and across generations. Mission: Improving population health and promoting health equity by understanding and influencing the complex conditions that impact the health of communities.

It was a pleasure to join colleagues at this event. I said at the start of my talk I always struggle with not having time to thank properly all the people involved (it would take up the whole talk and then some!), but I wanted to share a few key points from what I discussed and links to some of the people involved (I will inevitably miss some people - please know I appreciate everyone's input). I started by using a story from Wakefield to bring the commercial determinants of health to life: people like Anna Hartley Steve Turnbull and the public health team in Wakefield did the hard work, with support from Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming. I talked about the importance of movement building, networking and convening and quoted the brilliant Paula Leonard asking 'what are the feet on which this work will land.' I gave some examples of great networking going on: 1) the FPH CDoH SIG - lots of colleagues involved but special shout out to Alice Kadri & Professor Tracy Daszkiewicz FFPH our fantastic co-chairs, 2) The Association Of Directors of Public Health (UK) work supported by The Health Foundation and especially Heather Partridge & Laura Wilkins 3) events, position statements and convening in Yorks & the Humber https://lnkd.in/ecssZphn kicked off by Scott Crosby & Greg Fell as well as Simone Arratoonian & Toni Williams & Corinne Harvey and recently developed and built forward by Stefanie Gissing with support from Peter Roderick Diane Lee and others. I also referred to the amazing https://lnkd.in/e3NGtNuN Ailsa Rutter (OBE FKC HonMFPH) and work by Alice Wiseman Kylie Murrell. Then I moved on to talk about https://lnkd.in/eYGNx87f so many people involved but special shout out to Katherine Korner May CI van Schalkwyk Mark Petticrew Amy Barnes plus Tim Howells Caroline Temperton Susan Hampshaw Edward O'Malley Emma Gibson, Matt Greensmith Megan Doran Eleanor Houlston Vicky Smythe Samuel Bostock Greg Stenson. Then briefly covered https://lnkd.in/eMGndTzT Katherine Korner again plus many more esp https://spectrum.ed.ac.uk/. Referenced loads of brilliant toolkits and support esp Action on Smoking and Health (UK) Obesity Health Alliance Alcohol Health Alliance UK https://lnkd.in/eFdm5EQ2. Finished with a look ahead including https://lnkd.in/enb9Br32 Anna Gilmore Nason Maani Jeff Collin and more

Today, a small but mighty group of people from the Healthy Populations Institute at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia College of Social Workers, IWK Health Mental Health and Addictions Health Promotion team and Schools Plus in Nova Scotia, hosted an event for #NationalChildDay. Featuring students from Riverside School in Cape Breton (Unama'ki), along with a panel of youth involved in climate advocacy & moderated by Stacie Smith, we heard about the importance of youth connecting with, and protecting, our natural world. This was all beautifully captured by our graphic illustrator, Mo Glitch. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

This year marks the third year that the Healthy Populations Institute, IWK Health, Nova Scotia College of Social Workers, and youth advocate Stacie Smith have partnered to co-host an event for #NationalDayoftheChild!(November 20, 2024). These events seek to empower youth to speak on the issues affecting them. Last year we heard from youth on 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, mental health, and microaggressions and racism. Over the last 12 months, the youth we collaborate with have consistently raised climate change and nature as key themes of discussion across their circles. A common thread of hope has run through these discussions, resulting in us adopting a ‘showcase’ approach for exemplary collaborative and community-oriented efforts to address youth concerns. In 2024, we’ve also partnered with Riverside School in Albert Bridge to highlight the amazing collaborative work they have done in developing Riverside’s Knowledge Path. Riverside’s Knowledge Path is a wonderful example of integrating nature into learning and teaching and ensuring that youth feel connected with the land around them – ultimately promoting positive stewardship among future generations. Tomorrow, Wednesday November 20th, 2024, we are delighted to be hosting a hybrid event that highlights work done at Riverside school (video and presentation from members of the school) and provides a platform (panel discussion) for youth and adults who work with youth to engage in dialogue about nature and climate change. We welcome you to join us tomorrow for this very special hybrid event: in-person at the Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institute, or virtually!
