Empower the Next Generation of Enterprising Families
About us
The field of family enterprise has needed to innovate for quite some time. To date, academic work on the subject has been almost entirely focused on the parental generation of family businesses. Time to refocus. Canada is currently in the process of transitioning wealth and power to the next generation. According to the Family Enterprise Foundation, ownership of more than 60% of family enterprises will be changing hands within the next decade and within seven years, close to 40% of next gens will take control of their family enterprises. The Family Enterprise Legacy Institute at the Telfer School of Management is here to create an entirely new category of understanding and knowledge in this field. The focus of our work is an overarching holistic approach to the management of family business and the development of new best practices and policies. Traditionally, family enterprises have been served by business, financial and legal professionals. This institute will be taking a different approach and creating new knowledge. Our top priority is developing and sharing the knowledge, as well as the practices needed to effectively enable the next generation of family enterprise leaders to thrive, specifically through three areas of focus: - Thought leadership - Creating a forum for leaning and practice - Providing a safe space

As 2024 comes to a close, we're reflecting on meaningful milestones and moments, grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the family enterprise community in Canada and globally. A few highlights... ✨ We were honoured to receive a $5M donation from multi-generational family enterprise leader Patricia Saputo in January, the largest single contribution to date from a woman to the University of Ottawa. The gift created the endowed Patricia Saputo Distinguished Chair in Family Enterprise. Recently, Director Peter Jaskiewicz was named as the inaugural holder. We're grateful for Patricia’s support and look forward to continuing to work together. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gm2sPbxt ✨ This fall, FELI members Elizabeth Tetzlaff, Peter Jaskiewicz and Katrina Barclay launched a ground-breaking research partnership with the IMD Global Family Business Center and FBN (Family Business Network). The partnership will focus on the implications of enterprising families’ mental health on the family and business. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dqRvaTra ✨We continued to facilitate important conversations. In November, Peter Jaskiewicz co-moderated a session at the FBN Summit with panelists Jen McCain and Naim Ali, along with Olivier de Richoufftz. In May, Telfer Professor and FELI Contributor Ramzi Fathallah and Executive Manager Katrina Barclay went to Calgary to lead two key sessions at the Family Enterprise Canada Next Gen Retreat. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dRPK3ntM ✨Ensuring our work reaches a large audience, we continued to publish both academic articles and knowledge dissemination, such as in FFI Practitioner (https://lnkd.in/eRP9Jg-f), and Harvard Business Review (https://lnkd.in/dAjTsdqZ) ✨In September, we celebrated the successful PhD defence of Elizabeth Tetzlaff! Liz will continue to work with FELI, mostly notably by leading the mental health research project. Congratulations, Liz! ✨In October Peter Jaskiewicz received the The Family Firm Institute - FFI International award for his contributions to practice and policy globally. Recently Peter was included in a list of 25 top academics in his field globally by Family Capital. Congratulations, Peter! We look forward to continuing to work toward a better business future through supporting the vital #familyenterprise community. The FELI team sends best wishes to you and your family this holiday season and for 2025 🎉 #familybusiness #telfernation

Family Capital published its list of 25 top academics in the world of family enterprise this week. I am honoured and humbled to be among a great group of movers and shakers. Congratulations to the other FamCap25 members! 📣 Whoop Whoop! Just arrived. Our Handbook of Business Families (affectionately called “the brick”) is now available in a paperback version. This book calls for more attention to the families behind the business(es) and explores the entire ecosystem of family activities and their governance. We were fortunate to collaborate with many of the great family business scholars around the world, together with Mick Carney, my partner in crime for this project. Thank you! 🙏🏼 In paperback, it has even greater potential to resolve your insomnia: incurring an injury due to a brick falling on your face is now far less likely. Enterprising families are suffering from systemic mental health conditions, and their failure to acknowledge or treat them is proving to be detrimental to the family, the business, and their long-term success. In the below article – originally published in I by IMD – Family Enterprise Legacy Institute (FELI) Member Elizabeth Tetzlaff, IMD Global Family Business Center (GFBC) Director Peter Vogel, and FELI Director Peter Jaskiewicz explore mental health in the family business setting – its triggers, symptoms, and implications on the long-term success of the family enterprise ecosystem. The 2024 FBN (Family Business Network) Global Summit in Tokyo, Japan, was incredible. I want to sincerely thank the hosts – the Japanese FBN chapter, FBN president Alexis du Roy de Blicquy and his amazing team – Natsuda Minder, Christine Gaucher, Andrew Bryson – and all the speakers and supporters for their outstanding efforts. I also want to thank the outstanding panelists, Jen McCain and Naim Ali, and my co-moderator, Olivier de Richoufftz, for making our main session such a success. We had a great dialogue on the panel with a fully engaged audience about the vital responsibilities of family owners. Thank you! Moreover, I deeply appreciate the vital discussions throughout the summit and continue to do so. I want to highlight two: First, we must ensure that our thought leadership in the field has a meaningful impact. Knowing how to change the world is fruitless if we don’t take action. Fortunately, many movers and shakers work hard to create a greater impact. Let’s continue the dialogue on generational impact, sustainability, and family firms as a force for good. Thank you, Andrew Bryson, Marina Feffer, Jenaan Lilani, Navin Amarasuriya, among others! Second, mental health is vital. No one can make a difference in anyone's life if they are not well. We recently launched the largest international study on family owners’ mental health – a project three years in the making. Alexis du Roy de Blicquy announced this significant collaboration between our Family Enterprise Legacy Institute (FELI), the IMD Global Family Business Center, and FBN (Family Business Network) on the Summit's main stage in front of nearly 800 participants. I deeply appreciate the numerous discussions with delegates about the importance of this topic, their offers for assistance, and the urgency to start addressing it. We recognize our responsibility and will deliver. Stay tuned, and see you in Miami in November 2025!
