It starts with a mindset...

About us

ESSA believes that adopting a mindset rooted in Adaptive Management (AM) can improve how people manage today’s high-stakes environmental and social challenges. We use science and systems thinking to reduce uncertainty, we encourage diverse participatory processes, we focus on those elements that have the most influence on decision making, and we collaboratively guide our clients to make informed decisions. We are passionate about dealing with tough, emerging problems that demand an impartial, thorough evaluation of evidence to create innovative, robust solutions for a more sustainable world. We have found the AM mindset can help in a variety of ways even if only a few steps in the AM loop are completed. Our staff are problem solvers, big-picture thinkers, data driven, creative, rigorous and innovative, driven by an aspiration to become trusted advisers to our clients. ESSA began in 1979, building on ideas developed at the University of British Columbia about how to creatively apply science and systems thinking to help people tackle complex environmental and social problems. Those ideas coalesced into the concept of Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management. ESSA has been evolving and applying these ideas for over 40 years to over 2500 projects in over 40 countries across North and South America, Africa, and Asia. ESSA has a head office in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with a regional office in Ottawa, Ontario. We employ 30 full-time professional staff and have developed a wide network of associates, partners, and collaborators from around the world. • We are excited to share our latest publication in Environmental Management, titled “A Weight-of-Evidence Approach for Understanding the Recovery of Okanagan Sockeye Salmon.”  The paper disentangles the relative consequences of a set of environmental management actions that have been implemented to augment the Sockeye salmon freshwater productivity, while accounting for changes in freshwater and marine environmental conditions. One of the causal hypotheses explored includes the operationalization of the real-time Fish/Water Management Tool (FWMT; www.ok.fwmt.net), a decision-support system that was designed and implemented to improve the ability of front-line resource managers to deliver more fish friendly flows while balancing multiple objectives. Our study shows that the impressive Okanagan Sockeye salmon population recovery was a result of a series of management interventions and fortunate natural events that together brought this stock back from the brink. Collaboration lies at the heart of this achievement. The recovery of Okanagan Sockeye is a testament to the power of adaptive management, Two-Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk), and deep, sustained partnerships. A special thanks to all who contributed, especially Okanagan Nation elders, leaders, knowledge keepers and others who have desired for over 100 years to re-establish a balanced ecosystem approach to water management for salmon. As the Okanagan people say, “kt cp’əlk’ stim’”— heal a river by "bringing it back". The Okanagan case provides hope for the stabilization and recovery of other Pacific salmon stocks when people come together, believe and persevere to uphold the optimistic view of what is possible when we give nature a chance. • 🌍 Amplifying Locally-Led Climate Action in Uganda 🌍 📅 The day has finally arrived! With the support of @GlobalAffairsCanada’s #ClimateActionAfrica Project, the Ugandan Civil Society Organization (CSO) Support for Women in Agriculture and Environment (SWAGEN), the Ministry of Water and Environment @Climate Change Department (CCD), and @ESSATechnologies have teamed up to deliver regional workshops on "Planning for Locally-led, Gender-Responsive, Socially Inclusive Climate Action". Co-designed and co-delivered by the ESSA team and Ugandan civil society and government leaders, these workshops are for: 1. Women-led civil society and community-based organizations 2. District local governments responsible for climate action planning 🎯 Training Goals: - Strengthen gender-responsive and inclusive implementation of Uganda’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) - Provide a shared learning platform for both civil society and local government 🚺 Day 1: Women’s Climate Leadership Day Exclusively for women-led civil society and community-based organizations (CBOs), this day is dedicated to strengthening women’s knowledge and skills to influence policy and secure resources for their climate action priorities. 📚 Days 2 & 3: Bring together both women-led CBOs and district local government participants to learn about climate change, climate action planning, and opportunities to advance gender-responsive locally-led climate actions through existing district planning and budgeting. With a corporate purpose to sustain healthy ecosystems and human communities, ESSA is proud to be the Canadian Technical Expert collaborating on this #technicalassistance to support women’s participation and leadership in climate action. Local leadership in climate action means communities on the frontlines of climate change have a voice in decisions that directly affect them. 💪 Much gratitude to Climate Action Africa’s implementing organizations – @Alinea International, @Econoler, and @WSP_Canada – for the flexibility to carry out capacity strengthening in true #partnership. #ClimateActionAfrica #ClimateAction #GenderEquality #Women4Climate #locallyledadaptation #Uganda #ExpertDeployment #EDMCanada Participants from day 1, day 1 participants crafting their messages on climate action priorities, and out partner (SWAGEN) presenting on advocacy strategies.
