View profile for Glenda Christou, Ph.D., graphic

Adjunct Assistant Professor | Teacher | Mentor | Queen's University

Hi everyone, along with my colleague, Dr. Wei Yan, at Thompson Rivers University, we would like to invite you to participate in a research study by completing an online survey which focuses on Canadian teachers' mental health literacy, social-emotional learning beliefs, and teacher wellbeing. Whether you are a pre-service, in service or retired teacher, we are interested in your understanding of students’ social-emotional challenges and your subjective wellbeing. This research study has received ethical approval by the Queen’s University General Research Ethics Board. The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Please see the recruitment poster for more information on how to access the survey. Thank you for your time, Glenda Christou

  • 🌿 What Does It Mean to Decolonize Curriculum? 🌿 Decolonizing the curriculum is an essential step towards creating an educational environment that respects and includes diverse ways of knowing, particularly Indigenous perspectives. It’s about more than just adding content - it's about reshaping how we teach and understand knowledge. Here are a few ways educators can work to decolonize their curriculum: Include Indigenous Perspectives Incorporate Indigenous histories, knowledge systems, and worldviews across all subjects. Move beyond tokenistic lessons and engage with authentic Indigenous voices and sources. 📖 Challenge Eurocentric Narratives Question dominant historical narratives and explore how colonialism has shaped current social, economic, and political systems. Give space to voices and stories that have been silenced or marginalized. 🔍 Engage in Self-Reflection Reflect on your own positionality as an educator. Consider how colonial attitudes may influence teaching practices and content choices. Decolonizing starts with a commitment to continuous learning and self-awareness. 💡 Partner with Indigenous Communities Collaboration with local Indigenous communities is key. Invite Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous educators to co-create curriculum that truly reflects Indigenous ways of knowing and learning. 🤝 Decolonizing the curriculum is not a one-time action, but an ongoing process of learning, unlearning, and growth. It’s about fostering a more inclusive and equitable education system for all. #DecolonizeEducation #IndigenousKnowledge #EquityInEducation #TruthAndReconciliation #educatorexperiences

  • 🧡 3 Ways to Observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡 September 30th is a day of reflection, learning, and action. Here are three meaningful ways you can honor this important day: Learn & Educate Yourself Take the time to explore the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools. Watch documentaries, read survivor stories, or engage with resources from Indigenous organizations. Knowledge is a key part of reconciliation. 📚 Support Indigenous Artists & Businesses Celebrate the strength and resilience of Indigenous cultures by supporting Indigenous creators. Whether it’s purchasing from Indigenous-owned businesses or sharing their work, your support can help foster cultural growth and economic independence. 🎨 Wear Orange & Spread Awareness Wearing an orange shirt is a powerful symbol of solidarity and remembrance for the children who were lost and those who survived the residential school system. Share the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day with your community and encourage others to reflect and act. 🧡 Let’s come together with open hearts and minds to support healing and take meaningful steps towards reconciliation. #TruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay #SupportIndigenousCommunities #educatorexperiences

  • 💡 Mindset Matters in Education 💡 As educators, we know that the right mindset can transform challenges into opportunities—not just for our students, but for ourselves as well. Theodore Roosevelt said it best: "Believe you can, and you're halfway there." Believing in our ability to make a difference, even on the tough days, is the key to driving meaningful impact in the classroom. Whether you're tackling a new curriculum, navigating hybrid learning, or supporting students through challenges, remember that confidence is the first step toward success. Let’s continue to inspire our students to believe in themselves - just as we believe in them. 🌟 #EducatorMindset #GrowthMindset #TeacherInspiration #BelieveInYourself #EducationMatters #educatorexperiences
