  • Ecofish Research is attending the 2024 Watershed Forum, on November 27-28, where we will highlight our work on the Muchalaht Lake Outlet Restoration Project in British Columbia. This project is part of a broader salmon recovery initiative in the Gold River watershed that addresses key limiting factors for salmon, including degraded spawning habitat and low summer flows. In collaboration with the Nootka Sound Watershed Society (NSWS) and Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN), Ecofish has developed a flow constriction feature at the outlet of Muchalat Lake. This effective, process-based restoration approach creates passive water storage that depletes gradually during the summer, improving habitat conditions for salmon and Steelhead. The project also includes spawning gravel placement and other habitat restoration actions throughout the watershed. Morgan Hocking, Project Director and Senior Environmental Scientist, and David T West, Technical Lead and Water Resource Engineer, will be in attendance. Connect with them at the forum to learn more about this project and our integrated environmental services. #watershedforum2024

  • Ecofish is collaborating with the Salmon Coast Society, Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Fisheries Group (MDFG), and researchers from the University of Toronto and University of Victoria to better understand the effects of forest harvesting and other cumulative disturbances on Pacific salmon populations in coastal British Columbia. Supported by the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BC SRIF), the project includes several key components, such as blending local Traditional Knowledge from MDFG territories with Western science to inform both forest and salmon management strategies.   Ecofish’s spatial data analysis team has reconstructed forest harvest history from 1880 to the present across 1,745 salmon-bearing watersheds identified in Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s New Salmon Escapement Database System. Trends in forest disturbance and salmon abundance are being assessed over time and across different watersheds.   In recognition of National Forest Week, this work highlights the crucial role forests play in preserving salmon populations and demonstrates the integration of Two-Eyed Seeing: Welcoming all knowledge to sustain our forests. #nationalforestweek
