  • Ecofish Research is attending the inaugural BC Salmon Recovery & Resilience Conference on December 3-4, 2024, in Vancouver. This event brings together leaders in salmon recovery to discuss strategies for building resilience in salmon populations and their ecosystems across British Columbia. Ecofish has a longstanding partnership with the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF), working collaboratively to advance salmon recovery efforts. One example of this partnership is our current work with PSF and the Upper Fraser Fisheries Conservation Alliance (UFFCA) to develop a recovery plan for Chinook populations in the upper Fraser River. Using a “modified RAMs” approach, we are developing a framework for a watershed-specific recovery plan that addresses the serious decline of these populations and complements other recovery initiatives across the province. Our team attending the conference includes Todd Hatfield, Ph.D. (Senior Environmental Scientist), Ian Murphy, B.Sc., E.P. (Project Director), Katie Healey, M.Sc., P.Geo. (Environmental Flow Scientist), Jayson Kurtz, B.Sc., R.P.Bio., P.Biol. (Project Director, Fisheries Biologist), and Rachel Chudnow, Ph.D., R.P.Bio. (Fisheries Scientist). Together, they bring diverse expertise in salmon recovery, habitat restoration, environmental flow assessments, and fisheries science. We look forward to connecting with others at the conference to share insights and contribute to building a resilient future for salmon populations across BC. #PSF #2024BCSalmonRecoveryConference

  • Ecofish Research is attending the 2024 Watershed Forum, on November 27-28, where we will highlight our work on the Muchalaht Lake Outlet Restoration Project in British Columbia. This project is part of a broader salmon recovery initiative in the Gold River watershed that addresses key limiting factors for salmon, including degraded spawning habitat and low summer flows. In collaboration with the Nootka Sound Watershed Society (NSWS) and Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN), Ecofish has developed a flow constriction feature at the outlet of Muchalat Lake. This effective, process-based restoration approach creates passive water storage that depletes gradually during the summer, improving habitat conditions for salmon and Steelhead. The project also includes spawning gravel placement and other habitat restoration actions throughout the watershed. Morgan Hocking, Project Director and Senior Environmental Scientist, and David T West, Technical Lead and Water Resource Engineer, will be in attendance. Connect with them at the forum to learn more about this project and our integrated environmental services. #watershedforum2024
