IQC's Quantum Pop-Up Exhibit returns from the Netherlands Now, as we prepare for the International Year of Quantum in 2025, the IQC team is busy preparing the exhibit to inspire even more audiences. After an incredible year touring the Netherlands, IQC’s Quantum: The Pop-Up Exhibit is back! Created by the Institute for Quantum Computing (#IQC) at the University of Waterloo, this engaging, bilingual (English and French) exhibit introduces audiences of all ages and backgrounds to the fascinating world of #quantum information science. Originally launched as QUANTUM: The Exhibition in 2017 as part of Innovation 150, this 4,000-square-foot showcase was the first of its kind. It featured interactive activities, games, and videos to explore quantum concepts like #superposition and #entanglement. QUANTUM: The Exhibition has been retired, its successor, Quantum: The Pop-Up Exhibit, carries on the legacy in a compact, accessible format. With thoughtful storytelling and multi-level interactives, the Pop-Up Exhibit makes quantum science approachable and exciting for everyone, anywhere in the world. 👉 The 2024 edition of the Quantum Threat Timeline Report is out! The Global Risk Institute 2024 Quantum Threat Timeline Report is my most trusted reference to assess when a cryptographically relevant #quantumcomputer may exist. There are three main reasons for that: - It is based on the opinions of 29 global experts in quantum computing - It provides a useful risk based approach citing probability estimations over a long period - It includes many details and different representations of the data gathered throughout the research phase - I personally trust the authors, although this year it is signed by evolutionQ rather than by the researchers. I would have preferred the authors be kept in the credits. The main conclusions I take are: 🚩 The comparison with the 2023 report shows that the deadline keeps getting closer. This is aligned with the main vendors committing to their roadmaps. 🚩 The risk for 5-10 years is between 5%-34%. From a risk management perspective, considering the impact to our digital economy, this is very relevant. If we also take into account the time that will be needed to transition, we don't have much time left. The recent National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publication on the timeline to transition to #pqc disallows all classical public key cryptography beyond 2035, when a cryptographically relevant quantum computer may already exist. Probably there is no way to make it much faster. Hence, the need to start now and prioritize. The report concludes: "Those responsible for managing cyber-risk should not wait to act; solutions that can start to be implemented are available today. This will be facilitated by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) having recently issued the first standards for post-quantum cryptographic algorithms." 🚀 I had the incredible opportunity to attend qConnect 2024, a two-day summit in Calgary 🇨🇦 connecting quantum creators with users. The event was packed with inspiring speakers and panels exploring the big potential of quantum technology in health, energy, and sustainable cities. 🌍 💡 *Quantum Qubits & Qo. – Simplifying Quantum Science* Martin Laforest delivered an engaging session where he explained quantum science in the simplest terms. His key message? Understanding how qubits work isn't as important as identifying the problems they can solve! We don’t need to know how a laptop works, but we do need industries to share their real-world use cases. Murray Thom echoed this: we’re already using quantum computing – the key is to focus on applications, not mechanics. 🔎 *What’s the next big thing in Quantum?* Quantum Neural Networks to enhance machine learning? 🤖 Maybe! But Catherine Lefebvre, PhD argued that it’s not just about tech – subject matter experts need to collaborate with quantum computing to unlock its true potential. 🚧 *Barriers and how to overcome them* Rafal Janik from Xanadu challenged the audience: "Stop exploring toy problems! Let’s focus on real solutions." He emphasized the need for larger investments in fault-tolerant quantum hardware on a governmental level, rather than spending resources on low-impact projects. Bob Parneys advice was the opposite: "Start now! Understand the use cases that will impact your business and get your feet wet!" *IMHO?* 👉 Investments in early-stage technologies aren’t wasted – they provide valuable lessons learned for early adopters and set the foundation for future skills and solutions. 🏗️ *Setting the stage for success in the Quantum Ecosystem* Alexandra Beckstein’s message was clear: „when we want to enable this technology we need to support the startups to work in this field and that they can grow better.… it needs also a step back to show Innovation teams what they can discover in working with Startups“ 🌱 ⚠️ *Quantum-Safe – A critical risk* Martin Christen reminded us that there is no Plan B! – when it comes to securing our digital world in the quantum era! This is because we are highly digitized and connected to multiple systems and devices. It’s a long journey to quantum-safe systems, and leaders need to be prepared. Collaboration at the hackathon extends beyond just the participants.
