CHBA releases the results of the third quarter of the Housing Market Index (HMI). CHBA’s quarterly survey results inform all housing stakeholders with insights of Canada’s new home construction market. In Q3, both the single-family HMI (27.4 [out of 100]) and multi-family HMI (28.5) fell from the previous quarter. This is the ninth consecutive quarter that #CHBAHMI has shown negative home builder sentiment across key regions of the country. To see the full results, visit: chba.ca/hmi

Trending in #CHBAHighlights ⬇️ The federal government recently announced increasing amortizations to 30 years for first-time homebuyers along with increasing the cap on insured mortgages from $1-million to $1.5-million. https://lnkd.in/gbM8fGh7 These changes to mortgage rules will enable more well-qualified buyers to become homeowners, which will drive more home construction and supply. They are reflective of recommendations that CHBA has called for, as w/o qualified buyers, the industry can’t build the homes Canada needs. Mortgage rule changes like these are exactly what the market needs to help to correct the falling trajectory of housing starts and build more homes. Trending in #CHBAHighlights ⬇️ CHBA Kevin Lee said the GST on new housing is eroding affordability and removing the tax is long overdue. "Anything that's going to lower the actual selling price of the house is going to help create more housing supply." https://lnkd.in/gMnhSUyG   The announcement by the CPC that they would remove GST on new homes with a sale price under $1M would make a big difference, especially for first-time buyers. CHBA has been advocating for years with all major parties for a change to GST on new housing advising it would go a long way to address housing supply and affordability.
