Non-profit movement advocating for racial equity and championing BIPOC professionals in Canada's screen sector.

About us

BIPOC TV & Film is a nonprofit movement advocating for and amplifying Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour professionals working and creating content in Canada's film and TV industry. Our purpose is grounded in the principles of inclusion, equity, solidarity and community. From writers, directors, producers and actors to editors, crew members and executives, our members are a mix of emerging, mid-level and established industry professionals. BIPOC TV & Film is dedicated to the economic empowerment, creative sovereignty and career advancement of BIPOC both in front and behind the camera. Through our dynamic programming, we offer many opportunities to our community (at no cost) and our allies within the Canadian screen industry: Education, Mentorship & Training; Panels & Networking Events; Advocacy & Outreach. BIPOC TV & Film was founded in 2012 by Writer/Director Nathalie Younglai, who saw a need to form a community for others like her, who were also feeling isolated by the overall lack of diverse representation in the industry. In 2020, BIPOC TV & FILM took the leap from being a 100% volunteer-run organization to a registered non-profit and hired its first Executive Director. This evolution ushers in a new era and offers opportunities to expand our current offerings, build new programming and partnerships, and strengthen our impact. Our world is experiencing a renaissance, an awakening, a reckoning. Join us in our quest to reimagine, reframe, and revolutionize our screens and create opportunity for all!

  • Community-driven storytelling is the heart of cultural change. This powerful Manifesto for Community Film Distribution and Exhibition in Latin America from Ambulante AC resonates deeply. As we advocate for equity and inclusion in the media sector, it's critical to amplify voices and build networks that enable storytelling by and for our communities, outside of traditional gatekeeping models. In this manifesto, we see the spirit of empowerment and cultural resilience. It's a call to action to redefine distribution and exhibition in a way that centers local stories and audiences. We hope to see these ideas take root not just in Latin America but globally, as we all push for a more equitable, representative media landscape. 📖 Read the manifesto here: https://lnkd.in/e9-5RawD #FilmDistribution #CommunityMedia #EquityInFilm #BIPOCTVFilm

  • 🌱 Ongoing Advocacy. Continuous Growth. Collective Change. Since 2020, we’ve been hard at work pushing for meaningful change in the Canadian Screen Industry—and while we’ve achieved important milestones along the way, the work doesn’t stop here. Advocacy isn’t a one-time action; it’s a commitment to continuous improvement in an ever-evolving world. We remain focused on building stronger systems, amplifying underrepresented voices, and ensuring sustainable opportunities for racialized and underrepresented creatives. Whether it’s improving access, increasing visibility, or pushing for more equitable practices, we’re in this for the long haul. • What incredible moments captured! Couldn't be any more proud of you, Jonah Lee-McNamee -- we see you've been super busy since the Unscripted Producers Lab back in May. Glad to know your equipment is safe and sound 😉 Highly recommend giving this a watch.

  • BIPOC TV & Film commends the Canada Media Fund | Fonds des médias du Canada on releasing its 2024-2027 Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) Strategy. As an organization dedicated to advancing the careers and opportunities of Black and racialized individuals—and an advocate of reconciliation and Indigenous sovereignty—in Canada’s screen industry, we are heartened to see a commitment to structural change, inclusivity, and accessibility embedded throughout CMF’s future programs. The emphasis on supporting Equity-Deserving Communities aligns with our mission to address systemic barriers faced by underrepresented creators. We are particularly encouraged by the expansion of accessibility support, the enhanced capacity-building initiatives, and the continued focus on workforce training and development. CMF’s commitment to collaboration and partnership resonates deeply with us, as we believe these elements are crucial to creating long-lasting opportunities for Black and racialized creators, crew and performers within the Canadian audiovisual landscape. Moreover, CMF’s plans to increase market access for French content from racialized creators in international markets, including West Africa and the Caribbean, reflect an understanding of the global potential of Canadian talent. This is critical in ensuring the stories from our communities reach broader audiences while promoting sustainable growth for our creators and production companies. As CMF moves forward with this strategy, we want to reiterate our commitment to working together to foster an industry that is genuinely reflective of Canada’s diversity and accessible to all. We are especially eager to support efforts to improve data collection and research, expand mentorship and training opportunities, and build inclusive environments where emerging and mid-career professionals from diverse backgrounds can thrive. We would welcome further dialogue with CMF on how BIPOC TV & Film can continue to contribute to the success of initiatives like the Program for Racialized Communities. We are hopeful and excited about the potential for us to play an active role in the co-development of projects, mentorship initiatives, and strategies that prioritize Black and racialized communities in the audiovisual sector. Thank you Joy Loewen, Mathieu Chantelois and Valerie Creighton for your continued leadership in embedding EDIA in the fabric of Canada’s screen industries. We deeply appreciate your efforts and look forward to seeing these goals come to life over the next three years.

    Multi-Award-Nominated Writer & Designer | Bridging Storytelling & Design ✏️

📝 From Script Writing to UX Writing: The Art of Precision 📝 Have you ever thought about how creating TV and designing user experiences are almost one and the same? As someone who's transitioned from writing TV scripts to crafting UX copy, I've been reflecting on just how similar the two are and what that overlap looks like. Let’s look at how script writing aligns with UX writing! #ScriptWriting Structure: Humans enjoy, relate to, and are moved by stories because of how they're told. Structure is baked into the art of storytelling, so understanding story structure is the first step in engaging your audience. Consistency: As a TV writer, you're going to work on more than one show (hopefully!) and that means you need to be able to adapt to the voice of whatever show you're on at a given time. Brevity: Scripts need to convey a lot in a little space. Every word on the page, whether it's an action line, character dialogue, or the description of a location, needs to drive the story forward. Clarity: The script might make sense to you, but will it make sense to the hundreds of people that are making it in production? If your production designers, stunt coordinators, actors, directors, or anyone else on set don't understand your script, neither will the audience! #UXWriting Hierarchy: Effective UX writing exists to give users the confidence to make decisions as they're going through a flow. If the writing follows a clear hierarchy—headlines, subheads, body text, and calls to action, users will feel safe to engage. Consistency: Maintaining a consistent tone and style across the product is what leads to a cohesive user experience. Just like in TV, each piece of writing needs to feel like it was written by the same person! Conciseness: UX copy needs to be SIMPLE and get to the point so that users can receive the information quickly and move on with their task. Don't ask them to read a novel! Clarity: Clear and understandable language is essential to guide users through their journey without confusion. Not only that, but it's also essential for accessibility. You can understand what you've written, but will everyone else be able to? My journey from TV writing to UX writing has been driven by a passion for clear, engaging communication. The principles of precision, consistency, and clarity I honed in TV are now shaping exceptional user experiences in the digital world. 📺➡️💻 Have you found surprising parallels between different industries?
