It tackles the issue of untracked plastic waste generated by research laboratories across Canada. 🚮 Scientific research produces over 5.5 million tons of plastic waste annually, and despite existing recycling efforts, much of this waste still ends up in landfills or is incinerated ♻️ A substantial reduction of lab plastic waste is urgently needed to address this environmental challenge. BIOLABMATE was thrilled to be among the five Canadian startups chosen by the Embassy of Canada to Portugal | Ambassade du Canada au Portugal and maze impact to participate. We were also privileged to participate in the Proof of Concept - Made in Portugal Program, hosted by BLUEBIO ALLIANCE, where we showcased our in house seaweed-based biopellets to one of the biocomposites companies. A heartfelt thank you to Djordje Vidović, Sandro Dinis de Almeida, @Marta and Elisabete da Costa involved for the warm welcome and support. It was incredibly inspiring to connect with fellow Canadian startups and visionary leaders, including Mina Mekhail, Ph.D., from Freshr Technologies (formerly IHRD), Chloe Dubois from the Ocean Legacy Foundation, Nicholas LaValle & Sofia Serra from Clean Valley CIC, and Akansha Prasad and Tohid Didar from the Sentinel Group. Sharing insights and hearing about their journeys was both enlightening and motivating.

BIOLABMATE presented at the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association’s (naia) Seaweed Workshop, emphasizing the critical role of seaweed in developing sustainable bioplastics. The workshop also provided a valuable opportunity to hear about the challenges facing the seaweed industry, the economic opportunities it presents, and the diverse applications of seaweed across different sectors. We are grateful to the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association for offering this platform and facilitating such insightful discussions.

BIOLABMATE is an startup committed to transforming the plastics industry by developing sustainable, seaweed-derived bioplastics, with a focus on reducing the environmental impact of single-use plastics, particularly in scientific and medical fields. Our focus is on utilizing locally available, renewable resources to create bioplastics that can seamlessly replace traditional single-use plastic items. While recycling has long been promoted as a solution to plastic waste, it is insufficient to address the scale of the issues. In this one year, BIOLABMATE has achieved several milestones. As the year comes to an end, we had the opportunity to witness at the House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research for Recycling in the Canadian Parliament. During my remarks, We emphasized the importance of innovation in bioplastics and BIOLABMATE’s role in shaping a sustainable solution to single-use plastics in research and medical facilities. I extend my sincere thanks to the committee chair and all Honorable MPs for their thoughtful questions and the opportunity to share our vision. It was also a valuable opportunity to hear diverse perspectives on solving this critical environmental challenge. We sincerely thank our business and scientific mentors, whose invaluable guidance was instrumental in turning our vision into reality. Their support was essential in helping us navigate the complexities of aquaculture and deepening our understanding of the bioplastics market. As we move forward, continued investment in R&D will be crucial to scaling our seaweed-based bioplastics. 🌊 The 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Seaweed Culture Workshop hosted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland takes place tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 8) in St. John’s. The all-day event at the Sheraton Hotel is the first seaweed workshop in the province since 1996!🌊 More than 60 delegates from across Canada will participate in the workshop, discussing the future of seaweed and developing a road map to guide the growth of a sustainable seaweed industry in Newfoundland and Labrador and in the rest of the country.
