About us
The BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) is the oldest and most active civil liberties and human rights group in Canada. The BCCLA actively advances human rights and civil liberties through litigation, law reform, community-based legal advocacy, and public engagement and education. We are a non-partisan, charitable society with thousands of supporters and volunteers, including many pro bono lawyers providing tens of thousands of hours of legal assistance in our ground breaking test case litigation and over 100 precedent-setting legal interventions at various appellate courts. Though we are based in BC, our work is national in scope with legal interventions and law reform advocacy across Canada. Today, BCCLA President, Hasan Alam, spoke at a press conference in support of Amy Blanding, who was removed from her position by the Northern Health Authority for exercising her right to speak out in support of Palestinian human rights in her personal time. Amy Blanding stated: “I find it distressing that my support for basic human rights cost me my job. This is an example of anti-Palestinian racism in the workplace. I believe that Northern Health violated my constitutionally protected right to freedom of expression.” Hasan Alam spoke to the BCCLA's concern about what Amy's removal means for the erosion of our fundamental freedoms: "The right to express one’s views on matters of public importance, especially those related to human rights and international justice, is a cornerstone of our Charter-protected freedoms. Ms. Blanding's dismissal reflects a broader and alarming trend of employers disciplining and silencing individuals for engaging in political speech." “Whether in the workplace, academia, or public institutions, people are being unjustly penalized for standing up against systemic wrongs, including the complicity of Canadian institutions in international human rights...The BCCLA stands firmly with Amy Blanding in this lawsuit because defending her rights is defending the rights of all of us. We must not allow fear of controversy or discomfort to justify the erosion of our fundamental freedoms." "No one in Canada should ever have to fear losing their job or damaging their reputation for advocating for human rights, whether in Gaza or elsewhere." Vash Ebbadi-Cook who resigned in solidarity with Amy said: “I worry about what signal this sends to the broader Northern Health community members who chose to speak out against violence and for human rights and how this may silence them” Watch the Full Press Conference: https://lnkd.in/gNZZcYjT

📣Join the call for a national and provincial inquiry into the disturbing and disproportionate police-involved killings and deaths of Indigenous people, and for a formal, nationwide tracking system. Indigenous people in Canada are 10x more likely to be killed by police than white people. Between 2017 and 2020, 25 Indigenous people were shot and killed by the RCMP. Add your voice today and send an open letter letting the Premiere and Attorney General know that an inquiry is long overdue: https://ow.ly/3LVU50SUYFu
