Support our plans to build five new major vessels. #MoreSailingLessWaiting
About us
From our early beginnings with just two vessels operating on a single route, today we have grown to be one of the largest and most complex ferry systems in the world, with 37 vessels supporting 25 routes along 1,600 kilometres of coastline. From April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, our team of nearly 5,400 staff worked together to transport more people, vehicles, and goods than ever before. 22.6M passengers and 9.6M vehicles traveled with us on over 185K sailings — averaging more than 500 sailings per day. Our staff and crew are the heart of BC Ferries, every day they keep BC’s coast safe and moving.

#BCFNews Today, we formally submitted our plan to build five New Major Vessels to the BC Ferries Commissioner. If approved, this project - the largest capital investment in #BCFerries history - will increase capacity, resiliency, and reliability for BC’s coastal communities and economies. 2024 marked a record-breaking year for peak season ferry traffic. With BC’s population continuing to rise, travel demands are growing year-round. The project proposes replacing four aging vessels and adding one new vessel to our fleet. Each vessel will carry up to 2,100 passengers and 360 vehicles, significantly improving service and adding critical capacity on our busiest routes. Building these five New Major Vessels will reduce wait times and boost overall capacity by up to 28% for passengers and 19% for vehicles. That means #MoreSailingLessWaiting. Last week, our President and CEO, Nicolas Jimenez, delivered the keynote address at the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, highlighting BC Ferries' role as an essential public service. At the core of our work is the commitment to keeping ferry travel safe, reliable, and affordable for our customers, while preparing for the future needs of a growing province. Nicolas outlined the key priorities that guide our efforts: ✅ Replacing aging vessels and infrastructure to ensure safety and reliability for passengers ✅ Increasing system capacity to reduce wait times and provide a smoother travel experience ✅ Reducing carbon emissions to support a cleaner future for coastal communities ✅ Strengthening our connections with broader transit networks ✅ Securing funding and investment to build a resilient, modern and affordable ferry system It’s all about people - our customers, our people, and the communities who rely on our service every day. Together, we’re focused on building a ferry system that meets the needs of all British Columbians. Thank you to Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, event sponsors, and everyone who joined us. See you on board soon.

Phenomenal job, BC Hydro teams! Thank you- from our crew to yours 👊
Weathering the storm. Last week’s bomb cyclone was the most destructive storm we’ve experienced on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Our crews encountered significant damage that led to replacing hundreds of spans of wire, and dozens of poles and other electrical equipment. Our team was ready. Even before the storm, we started planning resources on Vancouver Island in anticipation of a potential extensive restoration effort. Once the nature of the damage was known, we sent additional crew and storm room support to Vancouver Island, while also dealing with restoration efforts in the Lower Mainland. Eventually we had more than 600 workers, including BC Hydro line crews, contractors, vegetation teams, field service administrators and others working around the clock to restore nearly all customers by Saturday evening. #PoweredByYou Thanks for the lift BC Ferries! #BCStorm

This holiday season marks the 32nd year we're partnering with United Way British Columbia to help vulnerable people and families from coastal communities, through monetary and/or food donations. To date, this employee-led initiative has raised over $1.7 million for those in need. This year we kicked off the campaign at our Head Office in City of Victoria BC. Mary Lynn McKenna, Executive Director of the Esquimalt Neighbourhood House Society, shared insights on the impact of the #UnitedWay campaign and how they're able to help residents through donations. United Way is an independent non-profit organization delivering resources and support to the people who need it most. They focus on addressing critical social issues involving Emergency Response, Children & Youth, Seniors, Poverty, Mental Health, and Food Security. The holidays are a time for family and joy, but they can also be a period of struggle for many. This campaign aims to help vulnerable residents of the communities we serve through support, resources, and connection. #BCFNews This morning, we celebrated the keel laying of the first two of four fully electric Island Class vessels at Damen Shipyards - a key milestone moving us closer to launching zero-emission ferries by 2027. This milestone underlines our dedication to sustainable operations, fleet modernization, and meeting growing demand. The keel laying ceremony is a time-honoured shipbuilding tradition marking a critical phase in a vessel’s assembly. Our CEO, Nicolas Jimenez, welded a Canadian coin onto the central frame of each vessel, a symbol of good fortune for the ship and future passengers. The 1 oz pure silver coins depict a pod of five orcas, reflecting the beauty of Canada’s west coast, where the ferries will sail. These fully electric vessels will serve routes between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island, and Campbell River and Quadra Island, carrying up to 390 passengers and 47 vehicles with zero emissions by utilizing renewable shore power for battery charging. They will replace older vessels and expand our Island Class fleet, which already includes six hybrid diesel-battery electric ferries. Scheduled to begin arriving by 2027, these fully electric vessels are a critical step in our journey to reduce corporate emissions by 2030. The four new electric ferries will eliminate approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually, advancing our transition from hybrid to fully electric operations as renewable shore power infrastructure becomes more accessible. "The keel laying is a significant milestone - not just in the construction of these ships, but in our journey to provide enhanced capacity and service reliability for our customers while moving toward a cleaner, more sustainable fleet." – Nicolas Jimenez, President & CEO Learn more: ow.ly/b3lT50TY8Lv

We are beyond proud to celebrate Hardeep Parmar who was honoured yesterday with the Victoria Hospitality Award from the Destination Greater Victoria team and the Mayor of Central Saanich, Ryan Windsor. Greater Victoria’s hospitality industry thrives on the passion, dedication and service excellence of its people. The #VictoriaHospitalityAwards celebrate those who go above and beyond to make Victoria an exceptional destination for its residents and visitors. The nomination was made by a member of the Brentwood Bay community: "I have been on this ferries for 4 times now. I have watched this man administer excellent customer service and help tourists and locals alike. He walks the elderly off the boat. Carries off luggage and goes above and beyond duties. Today my car was broken into and I had no money to get home. Hardeep gave me money for the fare and gave me use of his phone for me to make arrangements. What a guy." Hardeep has been with #BCFerries since 2010 and has a long-standing reputation within the City of Victoria community for going above and beyond for customers and doing it with a smile and a wave. He has built long-lasting relationships with the people that see him often on the #BrentwoodBay – #MillBay route on board the #Klitsa. This is the second time Hardeep has been nominated and won this award. Our People, like Hardeep are the Heart of BC Ferries. Thank you for everything that you do. Join us in congratulating Hardeep!
