Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to creating sustainable development. In addition to improving quality of life, access to inclusive education can help equip locals with the tools required to develop innovative solutions to the world’s greatest problems…The reasons for lack of quality education are due to lack of adequately trained teachers, poor conditions of schools and equity issues related to opportunities provided to rural children. For quality education to be provided to the children of impoverished families, investment is needed in educational scholarships, teacher training workshops, school building and improvement of water and electricity access to schools. (United Nations)
To provide quality education, where real learning takes place, we must have prepared learners, effective teachers, learning-focused inputs, skilled educational managers and good governance. The 1 Million Teachers (1MT) programs address two out of these ingredients – effective teaching and educational leadership – especially in the most deprived regions of the world.
As effective teaching usually comes down to teachers’ skills and motivation, the 1MT programs are designed to attract new young teachers to the profession – providing them with a solid foundation of basic subjects and pedagogical knowledge, ongoing professional development with effective mechanisms in place to mentor, support, and motivate them, while simultaneously training and motivating existing teachers to increase their professional capacity and enhance the learning outcomes of their students.
Ultimately, we aim to have a critical mass of highly competent and enterprising education changemakers who will help provide the needed improvement in learning outcomes in their communities. Our program goes beyond training to providing the teachers with pathways to lucrative professional teaching careers and job satisfaction
