Message #5 received at [email protected] (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: exim4 Version: 4.80-7 On my netbook I have an autogenerated exim4 configuration which works just fine most of the time. However, it causes an unreasonable delay at boot time. This is because update-exim4.conf wants to use hostname --fqdn, my netbook (being a mobile device) may or may not have networking available. Typically, at boot time, there is no networking. In my configuration I wouldn't mind if installing packages (which might try to rerun the exim config), or reconfiguring exim4 or exim4-config, depended on the network. But it would be good to avoid the dns dependency at boot time. I don't know exactly how to do this. My configuration is "local mail only"; I think it's trying to find the system's canonical name for use as the mail name but this is probably wrong for second and subsequent runs. So perhaps this is a bug in update-exim4.conf. Alternatively a workaround would be the ability to disable the automatic running of update-exim4.conf at boot time. There doesn't seem to be a hook for that right now. Comments/questions welcome. FYI my autogenerated config is below. Message #10 received at [email protected] (full text, mbox, reply):
Having just filed #747324, I have just come across #512206 which seems related. The workaround described in #512206 helps my symptoms. However, I still think there is scope for improvement: * I still think it should be possible for update-exim4.conf to avoid the DNS lookup on reconfiguration. After all on reconfiguration the defaults should be based on the previous configuration, not on the local network environment. * In the meantime the request in #512206 for a way to avoid DNS lookups specifically at boot time is probably a good one. Arguably this should be the default. * For people who don't want the "minimal dns queries" option, a facility to suppress the boot-time update-exim4.conf run would be useful. Thanks, Ian.
