Subject: upgrade of debconf breaks dialog interface
Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 13:36:24 -0600 (MDT)
Package: debconf
Version:
I recently upgraded debconf from 1.0.32
to debconf 1.4.30.2
After the upgrade debconf gives a dialog error when doing other packages
installs, indicating it cannot find the dialog program:
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog
debconf: (No usable dialog-like program is installed, so the dialog based
frontend cannot be used. at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Dialog.pm
line 66.)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline
Do you need a diagnostic log to figure this out?

It seems clear enough to me -- you have neither whiptail nor dialog
installed. Which is not a bug in debconf.

This questions seems perhaps stupid.
Before the upgrade dialog worked on debconf.
After the upgrade it did not work.
Why would it stop working?
If dialog worked before an upgrade, should it not continue to work after
the upgrade?
Installing whiptail fixed it.

Dialog will still work. Likely your upgrade removed it, either because
of some dependency problem or because you accidentially marked it for
removal.
