For Bucks County Community College Grad, Allman Brothers Band Concert Was Life-Altering Experience
Concert photographer Kathy Hurley, a Bucks County Community College student during the fall of 1970, found the Allman Brothers Band concert to be a truly life-altering experience, writes Dean Budnick for the Relix.
Hurley, an avid live-music enthusiast, joined the Student Activities Committee back then. In that role, she helped plan a concert with the local quintet Stockyard, to be followed by The Allman Brothers Band. The evening of music has remained with Hurley ever since.
“I remember being in the audience when the Allmans ‘hit the note’ and just grinning from ear to ear,” she said. “It was like no music I’d ever heard. It made me feel alive like I’d never felt before. Raw, joyful, righteous, ‘get up and move’ kind of music.”
After the concert, Hurley hung out with the band at the Holiday Inn in New Hope for three days, where she struck a friendship with the musicians.
She started snapping images of them and soon began documenting the band’s intense 18-month period, including their final show before the death of Duane Allman.
Hurley’s photographs are available in her book, A Rocking Adventure! Memories, Photos and More!
