Incredible positive leadership by Marcelo Claure and his team; we share his conviction for delivering outsized returns by leveraging diversity. In fact, we believe the time is now because in a world where AI can easily summarize and draw insights from the world’s information, we will increasingly commoditize conventional ideas and will pay a higher premium for non-conventional thinking. This non-conventional thinking will have to come from uncommon entrepreneurs and will be fueled by diversity of thought. This is why diversity in entrepreneurship will be an even more important driver of outsized venture returns.

As a frequent advisor to founders on Open Finance and its evolution in Emerging Markets, particularly with Brazil at the forefront, I see this trend as irreversible. The question isn't "if" but "when." 🤔 ❓ Here’s a glimpse into Brazil's Open Finance journey, three years post-implementation. The country has emerged as a pioneer and benchmark among emerging markets, while other regions continue to develop their open finance frameworks. ✅ By June, Brazil boasted over 45 million active participants in its Open Finance ecosystem. #fintechs are ruling the #venturecapital in #latinamerica — From April to June 2024, Latin American startups raised $2.2 billion in venture capital, with Brazilian companies leading by securing $1.2 billion. This represents a significant 160% increase compared to the same period last year. Notable investments include $308 million for CloudWalk Pagamentos and $125 million for Celcoin. Mexico and Argentina followed Brazil in terms of funding. Worth noting the Argentine Vercel with $250 million. Fintech startups were the most attractive, securing $1.3 billion in investments. Additionally, deep tech funding surged by 302% year-over-year. #Google Google announced today a new agreement with carbon removal company Mombak for the purchase of 50,000 carbon credits generated through Mombak’s reforestation projects in the Brazilian Amazon. The agreement marks Google’s first-ever purchase of nature-based carbon credits, and follows a commitment announced in March by the company to contract for at least $35 million of carbon removal credits over the next 12 months, and the announcement by the company earlier this month of another deal for 100,000 tons of Direct Air Capture-based credits at a landmark $100/ton price. Google also recently formed part of the launch of the Symbiosis Coalition, alongside tech giant peers Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce, a new advance market commitment (AMC) collaboration aimed at supporting the development and growth of the nature-based carbon removal market, and with a collective commitment to contract up to 20 million tons of nature-based carbon removal credits. https://lnkd.in/dntNtPav

Why Brazil Should Embrace Silicon Valley’s Collaborative Spirit for Business Growth In Silicon Valley, the business ethos is deeply entrenched in principles of diversity and collaboration, considered vital for innovation and success. This contrasts sharply with the business culture in Brazil, where historical trust issues often promote competition over collaboration. During a morning spent with Michelle Lane Messina, author of "Decoding Silicon Valley," I gained insights into how these principles are not just theoretical but actively practiced in the Valley. Michelle emphasized that in Silicon Valley, the sharing of resources, knowledge, and even key talents is viewed as essential to mutual growth, a concept supported by the absence of non-compete clauses and NDAs among companies and investors. However, in Brazil, the business environment is hampered by mistrust, affecting how companies interact. This mindset significantly impacts business growth trajectories. For instance, during my tenure as a senior HR executive, I faced accusations of inappropriately sharing confidential information with a major Silicon Valley supplier. While such actions were viewed suspiciously in Brazil, potentially jeopardizing competitive advantages, in Silicon Valley, they would be seen as leveraging crucial partnerships that foster innovation and growth. Michelle's book and our discussions shed light on this stark cultural difference. Silicon Valley thrives on collaboration and openness, where risk-taking is encouraged, and transparency is the norm. Conversely, Brazilian companies often struggle with these concepts due to fears of losing competitive edges, stifling the kind of open communication and cooperation needed for exponential growth and innovation. Moreover, the dynamic nature of relationships in the Valley—where companies can switch from competitors to collaborators in a single day—exemplifies the flexibility that can drive success. This fluidity is something we could greatly benefit from by fostering trust and leveraging partnerships more effectively. For Brazilian businesses to evolve and thrive, adopting a collaborative and open mindset is essential. Drawing from the lessons in "Decoding Silicon Valley," Brazilian companies could foster environments that encourage the sharing of ideas and resources without fear. This significant cultural shift, embracing the perceived risks and benefits associated with business collaborations, could not only enhance innovation but also accelerate the growth of companies within Brazil, creating a more interconnected and supportive business landscape.

In private conversations with investors, I've been defending for a while that Brazil was uniquely poised to receive increasingly more foreign investments due to its relative advantages compared to other developing economies. Namely, the absence of regional conflicts, abundance of natural resources, large population, diversified economy and growth prospects. The recent publication by Kearney of the 2024 Kearney FDI Confidence Index proves my point by showing Brazil at the 19th position in terms of attractiveness for foreign investments, after being left out of the top 25 list last year. There is still a lot to be done in the country for it to achieve its full potential and we, at Equus Capital, are doing our part by investing in critical sectors of the economy such as renewable energy generation, AI & IoT companies and regenerative agriculture combined with carbon credits. #developingmarkets #Brazil https://lnkd.in/dSkaKnM7

Main conclusions: 1️⃣ Great founders lead to great companies: We have some truly stellar founders around the world and these 14 founders represent that “amazingness”. 2️⃣ Diaspora’s are key: emigrated founders are an important part of our selection criteria, which is why we see more of them making it, but also more of them engaging (or re-engaging) with their home countries. 3️⃣ We get them early: On average these companies were selected 31 months into their voyage (~2.5 years after being founded). This means they were in the selection process (and showed promising indicators) ~1 year after launch.
