I am pleased to announce that my working paper, "Smoothing the New-Keynesian Capital Puzzle," is now available in the Central Bank of Brazil's Working Paper Series. https://lnkd.in/d_5q4KVX Introducing endogenous capital into the canonical New-Keynesian model allows real interest rates to move in any direction after a positive monetary shock. This would, arguably, prove that the real interest rate channel of monetary policy transmission is only observational — not structural — in that class of models, and therefore subject to the Lucas (1976) critique. In this paper, I show that such an identification problem for dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) and vector autoregression (VAR) models can be circumvented by incorporating interest-rate smoothing into the Taylor rule — a feature as prevalent in medium-scale New-Keynesian models as capital itself. I find that the negative association between changes in inflation and changes in the real interest rate is actually more robust than that between the former and changes in the nominal interest rate. #economics #macroeconomics #monetarypolicy #centralbank #dsge #newkeynesian

In a statement received by Reuters on Monday, the Para government's environmental secretariat Semas said it "will begin a new phase of dialogue" with Indigenous peoples and other traditional communities in the rainforest. Scientists say preserving the Amazon rainforest is vital to combating global warming. Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), and a group of companies agreed last month in New York to buy carbon credits in a deal valued at $180 million through the LEAF Coalition conservation initiative, which it helped set up in 2021 with other firms and governments, including the United States and United Kingdom. At the time, Para Governor Helder Barbalho said the deal had the participation of Indigenous peoples and other traditional communities. But last week, 38 Indigenous and community organizations signed a public letter saying they had not been consulted properly. "The transaction with the LEAF Coalition will be finalized in 2025, after the conclusion of this collective construction process," the Para government statement said. A series of high-profile controversies has shaken confidence in the market for carbon offsets, with several large companies that buy carbon credits retreating from it after studies found that large forest protection projects failed to deliver their promised emission reductions. Emergent, the non-profit coordinator of the LEAF Coalition, said consultations had yet to begin in Para on the LEAF agreement, which involves a forward purchase and no credits will be transacted until after the consultation process. "We have full confidence that Para is developing a REDD+ system with the active participation of a wide variety of communities and beneficiaries that play an active role in reducing deforestation," a spokesperson for Emergent said. 5 years ago, we stopped buying Brazilian government bonds due to the Amazon fires. It was a difficult decision, as climate-related risks in sovereign investments were not yet recognized. Since then, progress has been made, but challenges still remain in incorporating climate considerations into sovereign investments. Opinion: Carbon markets are at risk of falling into the same short-term thinking that destroyed ESG. Recently, there has been a renewed excitement in carbon markets. Reforestation projects in Brazil are leading a new wave of investment, tech-driven startups are improving credibility and there’s an increase in government endorsement and regulation. In terms of getting stuff done, this is great news. But there is scepticism. MSCI’s latest report “State of Integrity in Carbon Markets” showed that only 6% of the 4000 projects assessed showed a moderate to high probability that the projects will deliver on their aims. The reaction to this report is of course negative. Opponents of carbon markets are drawing conclusions that it's fundamentally flawed and that the whole concept needs to be thrown out. 𝗜𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻. There is a Bill Gates quote that is something like– “People tend to overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in 10”. This is true of ESG. We failed to see its long-term potential and work to improve the system, instead listening to "its just greenwashing". And now it's probably too late to save it. This week the SEC disbanded its ESG Task Force, which has been instrumental in keeping companies accountable to ESG. Notably, leading the $25m Deutsche Bank settlement for misleading investors. Ironically, we’ve now lost one of the few mechanisms that was making ESG function as it was meant to. As Lindsay Hooper put it in her recent FT article “ESG is dead, long live ESG”: “We don’t have enough time to rebuild institutions and economic systems before the global ecosystem spirals into chaos. We must leverage the markets potential to deliver change quickly and at scale by redesigning business incentives and penalties” 𝗡𝗼𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀. We don’t live in a system that allows us the perfect mechanisms for protecting the planet's ecosystems. Ideally, the ecosystem would be at the core of our economic system. Every economic activity would be measured, incentivised and penalised against its ability to improve environmental and social conditions on our planet. Instead, we have a self-regulating system where economic activity is led by the political agendas and emotional whims of people. In the context of this system, flawed carbon markets are one of the best tools we have for protecting the planet’s ecosystem, and as such, our future. Let’s not let carbon markets go the same way as ESG. It's much easier to pooh-pooh the whole concept than to actively work to improve it. And that's just lazy. Because if we destroy carbon markets as well, I don't know what else we have left.

The SBFN 8th Global Meeting wrapped up last week after two days of insightful discussions and collaboration. Co-hosted by IFC - International Finance Corporation, Banco Central do Brasil and FEBRABAN, the event gathered over 40 speakers and participants from 60 countries in Rio de Janeiro, marking a significant milestone for Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs) in the global dialogue on sustainable finance. Held alongside the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG) meeting, the event underscored the critical role of EMDEs in driving the global transition to a resilient, low-carbon economy and served as a platform to announce key initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable finance: ✅ 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐁 to transform sustainability reporting in EMDEs. Debates on data governance should be centered on crosscutting issues such as information integrity, climate justice, health, the future of work, nondiscriminatory Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs), and regulatory parity based on human rights and data justice".
