Reference Librarian for Outreach and Engagement - (3267621) The MGH Institute of Health Professions is seeking a Reference Librarian for Outreach and Engagement.

SUMMARY The Reference Librarian for Outreach and Engagement at the Bellack Library plays a vital role in the smooth functioning of the library.
This academic health sciences library is renowned for its service-oriented approach, and the Reference Librarian is an essential part of the team that works collaboratively within and outside the library to achieve departmental and institutional goals.
The Reference Librarian works under the general supervision of the Director of the Library and is responsible for information services, outreach, and student engagement.
The Reference Librarian is expected to work independently as well as with colleagues to draft, implement, and evaluate related policies, procedures, and outcomes in these areas.
One of the primary objectives of the Bellack Library is to be a welcoming, user-friendly space both in-person and online.
To achieve this objective, the Reference Librarian applies User Experience Design (UX) principles to all services keeping in mind the needs of a diverse population, especially in the area of student engagement.
The Reference Librarian strives to ensure equitable service to all students, faculty, and staff and actively contributes to the MGH Institute of Health Profession's efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive campus community.
The Reference Librarian for Outreach and Engagement is an important member of the small staff at the Bellack Library, and the role comes with a range of responsibilities.
It requires excellent communication and collaboration skills, a passion for service, and the ability to work in a service-oriented environment.
The Reference Librarian is expected to be proficient in information services, outreach, and student engagement, and to apply User Experience Design (UX) principles to all services.
The successful execution of these responsibilities will ensure that the Bellack Library continues to remain a welcoming, user-friendly space for all.
ABOUT BELLACK LIBRARY The Bellack Library is a valuable resource for the MGH Institute of Health Professions, providing support to faculty and students in all three schools and programs.
The librarians work closely with the staff and administration to promote evidence-based practice and scholarship across the institution.
As a service-oriented organization, the Bellack Library takes a broad approach to its work, participating in committees and initiatives that support the whole student and the institution as a whole.
The library staff is committed to the advancement of the institution and frequently participates in committees that focus on planning new programs, strategic planning, and supporting teaching and learning.
Additionally, the library is committed to student engagement and wellness, recognizing that the library plays a vital role in students' academic and personal growth.
The Bellack Library and Instructional Design Team is currently participating in an institution-wide anti-oppression initiative.
The library is working closely with the Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion to educate themselves, examine their practices, and begin the work of an anti-oppression audit.
The Assistant Director of Library Services will play a critical role in this initiative, helping to develop strategies for promoting equity and inclusion across the institution.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES 1) Research, Instruction and Information Services (45%) Supports student and faculty scholarship by providing instruction and guidance in the use of library tools, developing literature reviews, principles of evidence-based practice, the research process, health information literacy, and other topics as necessary through different modes including workshops, individual and small group research consultations, and reference services, any of which could be in-person or online depending on student/faculty needs.
Creates research guides, video tutorials and other learning objects to facilitate asynchronous library instruction.
Collaborates with faculty to embed customized library instruction in courses and to select library materials for coursework, including providing guidance with copyright/permissions issues.
2) User Engagement and Outreach (20%) Plans, publicizes, and evaluates outreach and programming to engage audiences and promote library services.
Collaborates with constituencies outside the library to maximize community engagement, including the possibility of serving on committees 3) Student worker supervision (20%) Recruits and hires graduate student workers.
Trains and supervises graduate student workers to perform front-line reference services, including in-person help desk, chat reference, and email reference.
Engages student workers in outreach activities such as social media and library programming 4) Course Reserves (10%) Maintains and updates the collection each term Outreach to faculty Integration in learning management system 5) Professional Development and Service (5%) Stays current and expands professional knowledge in skills via participation in continuing education courses, professional associations, and other professional development opportunities.
Communicates actively with fellow professionals through regional and national conference attendance, research, publishing, and presentations.
Work Schedule: 40 hours/week, mainly distributed during business hours, Monday-Friday, but with the possibility of occasional evenings and weekends.
Work may be performed in a combination of on-campus and remote environments (possibility of remote work two days/week.
) On-campus: shared office environment with significant time spent in front of a computer, attending group meetings or one-on-one meetings.
Remote: requires a suitable employee-provided work environment, with significant time spent in front of a computer, working with the IHP’s learning management system, conducting remote consultations and attending group meetings via Zoom.
EDUCATION Required Master’s degree in library science (or similar) from an ALA accredited program.
Minimum 3-5 years’ experience providing reference and instruction services in an academic library, with progressively responsible experience.
Experience taking the lead in designing and delivering library services.
Experience evaluating library services.
Experience with planning and implementing library programming for students and faculty.
Experience collaborating with faculty and staff outside the library.
Preferred Experience providing reference and instruction to students, faculty, or clinicians in a health sciences library.
Experience supporting systematic/scoping reviews.
Experience engaging faculty and administration in evidence-based practice and/or information literacy efforts.
Knowledge of User Experience Design principles, methods, and tools Experience supervising student workers The Ideal applicant will possess the following a) Administrative Skills Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a variety of user groups.

b) Technical Skills Excellent Database and Internet searching Moderate knowledge of website programming languages Facility with Microsoft Office 365 applications Familiarity with graphic design applications such as Canva or Adobe InDesign c) Physical Capabilities Travel to the Institute campus in Charlestown Travel between building floors and to other MGH locations Lift and move library materials (up to 30 lbs) Verbally engage with faculty and students in a variety of ways.
