Fabian and I visited Kruger National Park. On Wednesday 11 July we flew from Johannesburg to Skukuza Airport, which is in Kruger Park. We picked up a rental car and drove 2.5 hours to Satara Lodge where we stayed 2 nights. The night of the 12th we took a nighttime tour to see nocturnal animals […]

From Noida we went to Mathura to visit the birthplace of Krishna. I was surprised when Nandan told me that the temple had been partially demolished by Muslims to replace it with a mosque. This means that all of the three favorite sites of the most popular gods – Shiv’s Kashi Vishwanath, Ram’s birthplace in […]

Nandan and I went to Ayodhya, the birthplace and royal home of Lord Ram. He was actually going to a funeral for a friend’s grandfather, but Ayodhya was nearby. I wanted to join him for both events. Ram is one of the most popular Hindu deities. He was an avatar of Lord Vishnu and the […]

I went to the Monkey Temple today and enjoyed it. Today is Tuesday so there was a big crowd there. Tuesday is Hanuman’s day. The monkeys here were nicer than ghat monkeys, but they still harassed people. The monkeys would put their hands out to beg for treats and if people tried to feed them […]

I left my socks to dry on the balcony and they were befouled by monkeys last night. Now again they are tossed about without regard to my need but this time they have been urinated and defecated upon. Monkeys sit outside my window. I will shower and leave this Mishra Guest house not to return.

I went out on my balcony to hang socks to dry – I do not yet understand or want to learn the laundry cleaning infrastructure – and four monkeys were sleeping on the balcony next to mine. They could have chosen mine for sleeping, and had that been the case I would have angered them. […]

I just woke up. I realized last night at my Hindi class that my water uptake is up to about seven litres a day and still I am thirsty. Abiji told me that I should stay warm so I asked for an extra blanket and I was warm last night. Also I will wear my […]

I am at Mishra Guest House. I paid Rs 150 for room 206 and I like this room better than others I have had. There seems to be no electricity despite many lights and switches and there is I hot water tap I have not tried but I doubt it works now. I am near […]

It is 5:30pm and I am rather tired. I checked out of Puja guest house and wandered about. Now I am at Shiva Lodge with owner Vijay Dixhit for Rs 200 in a room facing the Ganges. The view is not luxurious but it is certainly interesting and foreign, and it seems to be family-run. […]

When I got off the plane I had to walk a long way through the airport. Customs checked nothing – just as customs to England did not – and to leave the airport I had to enter a walkway flanked by two crowds. Lonely Planet says go to the taxi booth and get a prepaid […]
