Respect your Youngers. Yes, 'respect your elders' is a common saying, that has much merit and wisdom* (*not all elders are cut from the same cloth). But the conceit works the other way too. The Youngers are the generations to come. Can we think about those who will inherit the Earth, quite literally - these newcomers to the world scene - and extend an attitude of care and responsibility in the here and now? Future citizens are alive right now. Those who shall be alive in the year starting with 2100 are here. Right. Now. What are the ways we can be responsible stewards, guardians, and ancestors for life that is currently in infant mode as you read these words? Each generation inherits challenges and solutions. What if we decided today, that we'd rather solve more of the challenges, than bequeath an inheritance of existential harms? Perfect strangers seemingly long since gone, are not really so. They exist in the artefacts, the people, and the cultures in which we are enmeshed. Their deeds and actions live on - from Victorian age plumbing, penicillin and the wheel, to deforestation, species extinction and redlining. The law of reciprocity would indicate that we are already in a social contract with future generations. Each of our actions will still be alive in the world long after we are physically gone. Our names won't be attached to them, our singular identity, the 'I', will fracture and disappear into the wind, but our contributions will leave an imprint. We have a planet full of beings awakening to the larger time cycles at play. Now is the time to channel our individual contributions towards collective flourishing. Can we step up, to show our maturity as Elders-in-the-Making, that we were adept at creating massive, life-ennobling change at the collective level, when it mattered most? Sometimes we find ourselves in a pit: one we fell into suddenly, or perhaps one we slowly slid into. We might know change is needed, but if we are not careful, we can become dangerously comfortable in our pits, maybe even decorating them as if we are meant to stay. But God wants us to be delivered from our pits, not to decorate them. Sometimes, in our furnishing of the fallen places we forget we have even fallen. We forget that we are indeed in a pit because we have cushioned it with frills and excuses, blinding us from truth. It’s possible to get comfort in spaces that are not good for us. We white wash places that carry the potential for spiritual black mold. Here is the thing: God is with us and He will guide us out, but the first thing we need to do is recognize where we are. We need to call it what it is, and then LOOK UP. Time can make us forget we are in a pit until we look up. God is still good. He is our way out but we need to look to Him and for Him. He is an expert deliverer. He will lead us out, one obedient step at a time. Jesus did not die on the cross for our sins to have us remain slaves to them. He did not rescue us to remain in pits – even beautifully decorated ones. For the one feeling discouraged: look up. God is with you and He has more ahead. Treasure the memories and lessons learned, welcome what’s new and remember change can be good. Sometimes, the answer we are longing for is in the change we are resisting. God does not leave not us behind but He may ask us to leave behind what once was… even if we once thought it was good. Stop decorating the spaces you are not meant to stay. Look up and rise from the ruins for rebirth and revival. God redeems. He restores. He rebuilds. He is the way out because He is the Way, always. By Jen Kosuda
