Quick engineering salary comparison based on the #DEVBG stats from 2023 and 2024 in the Bulgarian IT industry. Dev.bg publish yearly a summary of the Bulgarian IT engineering salaries based on the job openings offers on their platform. https://lnkd.in/dNU5MD8D (2023 stats) https://lnkd.in/dX_dxvP7 (2024 stats) Based on the population data (let's assume it's a proper representation of the real world) we can determine the following: 1. PHP should be dead but it isn't (unfortunately) as it's one of the two categories with growing salaries in all job positions and ranges. 2. The second is the full stack development with a minimum drop of 65 levas in the first MID range(2-5 years) 3. All ranges except the Senior level(5+ years of experience) have a drop in salary compared to 2023 but for some seem negligible compared to the notion in the industry that "it's going down and AI will take over the world" :) 4. We can see that seniority still counts and there is now a shift towards growth of salaries of more senior people compared to others as the market tries to regulate. 5. There is still a lot of green for a "dying" and "shrinking" industry. Yesterday I had the pleasure of flying the TestCoders -banner to Romania and run our full-day (hands-on) tutorial on using Cypress.io (from zero to hero) at the Romanian Testing Conference. I'm not selling nor promoting Cypress, but rather giving participants insights and (actual) experience to enable them making informed decisions on 'if', 'where', 'when' and 'how' to use it (succesfully). Why I do this? Because the test automation community (still) seems to suffer from a condition I call 'tool fetish'. We (as a community) just love comparing testing tool with one another without any real context. I believe attempting to compare testing tools without context is as shallow as saying: "Harley Davidson motorcycles are better than the Volkswagen transporter..." 🤔 Context always matters! And context requires knowledge and skill. So let's keep on gaining that knowledge and skill and keep our minds open like the great folks at the Romanian Testing Conference and never stop collecting context! I was the guide again today for our #Java #Spring Fullstack meeting(Lucky me)! Definitely felt a bit better then last time as we had a discussion about what it is that is left to do functionality wise when it comes to our update checkin page. And we agreed that the functionality is basically all there, it just needs some html/css love and care. We did a small fix on our padding for the left side of our update checkin after we went through and tested all our functionality with our input fields and buttons and checking that they did make it into the database. Then we did a check for System.out and comments, now we're ready for code review! #fullstackdeveloper #programming #coding #Hibernate #SQL

I just finished this Functional Programming with PHP certification, and I wasn't sure what to expect. As a software developer that specializes in object-oriented programming, and who used procedural programming before specializing, I am very glad I decided to take this course because it is vastly different. So if you're not familiar with this, procedural programming focuses on a series of steps to reach a desired State. And that's great for smaller applications because it's simple and effective. But over the years, I've been contracted for more complicated applications and project builds. So I really had to change to object-oriented programming. Complex applications benefit from OOP's modularity and it's ability to reuse blocks of code. It's also fantastic with the security of both the code and the data. Now this course was specifically on functional programming and the use case where it would be the right method can be quite specific. For example, functional programming is appropriate for mathematical and data-intensive jobs because it emphasizes immutability and pure functions. It treats programs as evaluating mathematical functions and goes out of its way to purposely avoid state and also mutable data. If you're a developer and you adopt either procedural or oop as your method of choice, you should check this course out. I have started thinking of ways to incorporate this into oop, and the goal of course would be to have the best of both worlds. I'm sure the author would disagree because his focus is only that of a functional programmer, but as I do this daily, I can certainly see the benefit of utilizing both in my projects. Regardless of what method you favor, at the end of the day, I think you'll enjoy this course on many levels if you're a developer like moi. At JettyCloud, there are many different technological teams. We're starting a series of stories about them and their work. Engineering Manager Irina Skaterschikova talked about what the Billing team does: "Billing is a full-stack team. We work with Java 17, Spring Boot framework, Oracle, Typescript, Rabbit MQ, Docker, and Kubernetes. We're involved in developing and maintaining the Billing Admin Portal. It's an internal high-load service that allows managing and configuring billing both at the level of individual users of our service and the entire billing system as a whole. Currently, we're working on two major projects: developing and supporting tools for partners that help us actively sell the service and increase profit, as well as developing new and improving existing tools for managing the billing catalog with a UI. For example, there's a lot you can do from the portal: change cards, transfer to another subscription, change payment methods, give discounts to users, or suspend them, access billing history, and much more... With a few clicks from the UI, our financial specialists can independently create new subscription plans or expand existing ones, change prices for offered services, manage subscriptions for sales, for partners, create new services for sale, and plan their launch. All this can be done without the involvement of engineers and without adjusting to release cycles! As for what motivates in my team, there are several positive points for me: - We're working on an unusual and important product for the system — we managed to fit and store different things in one architecture: price, provisioning settings, and much more, and it's all user-friendly! It's not just a portal where you can set prices and so on — it's a complex system where all components interact with each other. - We have short development and delivery cycles, which keeps us on our toes. 💶 According to a recent study, a family of 4 needs 2090 EUR (10450 lei) for a "decent life" in Romania, an increase of 4.7% compared to 2023. The biggest costs are those for housing and food, and the budget also takes into account categories like culture, vacation and savings. One person would need about 800 EUR (3972 lei). They say there is a crisis in the world now, and maybe it's true! Rumors also suggest that the crisis in Ukrainian outsourcing is causing our IT sector to decline, and this may be true as well. Here's my take: there shouldn't be many intermediaries during a crisis, and the current business model, particularly outsourcing, is heading toward a downfall. If we look at the situation realistically, the number of job positions is ten times less than the number of applicants. I don't believe the competition is just 1 to 10; for good positions, it's more like 1 to 50! It's no longer surprising to encounter uninformed recruiters who often make ridiculous offers on irrelevant technologies. They don't understand the field and create unnecessary confusion. Why is this happening? A pretty face doesn't equate to knowledge. Our market is so saturated with middlemen that it hinders the job search process. Today, I set a record by sending about 60 requests to platforms similar to Djinni (https://djinni.co/). I've realized that it's crucial to go directly, bypassing these intermediaries. Everyone should do this instead of sitting idle without tasks. The path opens for those who walk on it. In this post, I want to share two things: 1. That I am proud about dotLumen (see the video below) 2. How to benefit from the power of saying "no" 1.dotLumen I am incredibly proud to see these young people create a fantastic alternative to the only two traditional solutions available to blind people: the dog and the white cane. It's even more inspiring that they're doing this right from my hometown and making a significant social impact. What a breath of fresh air for the #Cluj tech scene! I especially admired how Cornel described covering their eyes to understand better the challenges faced by blind people, leading to more effective solutions. 2. The Power of "No" This team inspired me to reflect on the importance of saying "no" and taking the time to understand problems deeply. I'm one of those people who has to practice saying "no consciously"; it doesn't come naturally. When I think about these young people blindfolding themselves to experience the world as a blind person, it makes me realize how much we can gain by genuinely understanding our users' challenges. Often, we're rushed to meet tight deadlines on projects. As leaders, we must push back to create space for this more profound understanding. The rewards are immense. Of course, saying "no" to your manager is challenging. However, by consistently pushing back, you'll discover how much time and value you can create by thoroughly understanding a problem first. This was a valuable insight for me, and I hope it also resonates with you. I'm curious: what strategies do you use to say "no" with more confidence?
