Traditional scaling methods, like expanding geographically or increasing production, often hit roadblocks due to fragmented land ownership, diverse farming practices, and the high cost of technology adoption in rural areas. This has led to many Agritech startups struggling to scale their operations effectively. ☘ DECENTRALIZED MICRO-HUBS Instead of attempting to scale across vast regions at once, successful Agritech startups have focused on establishing local micro-hubs—small, localized centers of operations that are tailored to the specific needs of the surrounding agricultural community. Can AgTech Support Agri Consultants to Maximize Their Impact? We all know consultants who are real experts in their field, and because of that, many people seek their services. But can they be present in all those fields at the same time? Of course not, but AgTech solutions can. Take, for example, a consultant for plant nutrition. They need to provide accurate advice and nutrition plans for different farmers and their orchards/fields. While there are standard fertigation plans, the situation in the field doesn't always match these standards—not all plants react in the same way. This is where soil sensors come in. They monitor and send data to the cloud, allowing everyone to see the amount of nutrients and soil pH in real time. With this data, combined with visual checks of the plants (which can be done through photos), consultants can more easily adjust fertigation plans and ensure each plant gets exactly what it needs. AgTech Ecosystem - continuing the narrative of labor challenges increasing in CA ag, acreage and farmers leaving because of it, some progress in automation to help (weeding, spraying, harvest assist) but limited progress in harvest, and the overall slow down in venture capital (all segments) will only make it harder for automation solutions. Slide 6 - how is AgriFoodTech VC doing? The short version is a similar story to overall VC - big run up through 2021 and a huge drop since. This has big implications for automation. 1) From 2013 to 2023, AgriFoodTech VC saw a huge jump in VC from $3B in 2013 (when Climate Corp was acquired by Monsanto for over $1B) to $53B in 2023, a 1700%+ increase. The category went from AgTech (behind the farm gate) to AgriFoodTech (included the entire supply chain on both sides of farm gate) and the $53B was roughly half behind the farm gate (including automation solutions for labor) and half beyond the farm gate. 2) After 2021, AgriFoodTech VC (just like VC funds and IPOs in the prior post) fell off a cliff - from $53B in 2021 to $31B in 2022 to $16B in 2023. That's a 70% drop in AgriFoodTech VC over 2 years. As you can imagine, this drop in capital is making fund raising very challenging for all AgriFoodTech segments, including automation. 3) So what happened? Well, two categories explain much of the carnage felt by the whole space - CEA and alt-protein, which represented 42% of the $53B in 2021. CEA (controlled environment agriculture - defined to include both vertical farming and greenhouse farming - i.e. Plenty, Bowery Farms, AeroFarms) and alternative proteins (Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods) both saw huge deployment of capital with very poor results and returns to date (and no end to that status in sight). In both categories, the media hype positioned them as green field opportunities (pun intended) and they were never that. Every single vertical farming operation has to compete with vertically integrated specialty crop grower-shippers and every alt-protein operation has to compete with other food manufacturers for shelf space at retail. The unit economics of both the facility (costs $s to build and $s to control the temperature) and retail SKU (can the product arrive at a price with margin that can compete with traditional products) were always going to be challenging, and that only got more true with materials and energy cost increases from inflation. A little better due diligence from VCs would have uncovered the competitive dynamics that the media did not report on. 4) The expected result - limited partners got burned with no capital returned, VCs got similarly burned, and AgriFoodTech VC likely stays in the current $15-20B annual tranche until exits pick back up. Automation startups looking for fundraising rounds in the next two years will find them challenging. Rhishi P.
